Spring into Summer YMI Project
The Spring into Summer Youth Music Initiative (YMI) Project gives primary school pupils a chance to get hands-on with practical music-making. The project uses music as a doorway to different world cultures, helping children build a clear, real-world understanding of orchestral instruments and different global cultures and ensembles.
Fully aligned with the Curriculum for Excellence, these sessions enrich everyday classroom learning by bringing live performance and unfamiliar instruments straight to pupils in an engaging, interactive setting.
Spring into Summer is delivered directly in schools by our Specialist Instrumental Music Teachers (IMTs) and the project centers on three core practical strands:
- Instruments of the Orchestra Presentation – An interactive tour of the instrument families (Strings, Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion). Pupils hear live acoustic demonstrations, explore how different timbres and pitches work together, and experience live performance up close.
- Samba Drum Workshops – High-energy group drumming sessions exploring the traditional rhythms of Brazilian Samba. Pupils play authentic carnival instruments—including surdos, caixas, tamborims, and agogô bells—while learning about pulse, polyrhythms, and call-and-response playing.
- Practical Music-Making & Creative Workshops – Hands-on activities focused on rhythm, group singing, and simple composition. These sessions build pupil confidence, improve active listening, and connect musical styles to broader world traditions.
