Primary 1 January Blog

Dear Parents and Carers

We hope you all had a lovely Christmas break.

Last term was a busy term for Primary 1. The children performed brilliantly in the Nativity and we were very proud of them for all of their hard work. The children really enjoyed the Christmas Fayre organised by our lovely Primary 6/7, their Christmas activity day and their Christmas party.

Numeracy

We have been learning to:

· count forwards using the forward number sequence and count backwards using the backwards number sequence.

· recognise, identify, form and order numbers to 10.

· identify numbers, before, after and in between in a sequence of numbers within 10.

· add within 10.

· build and start to memorise the number stories to 10

· recognise 2d shapes and 3d objects.

This term we will be learning to:

· recognise and identify numbers to 20 and to count accurately within 20. We will be doing lots of counting using our forwards and backwards number sequence to 30.

· subtract within 5 and then within 10

· identify a half and the ½ sign

· recognise, write and order the days of the week

· identify and make o’clock times on analogue and digital clocks

· measure using weight and volume

How can you help us?

· use the number flashcards, help us to recognise and identify all numerals to 20

· sequence numbers to 20 from smallest to biggest and biggest to smallest

· practise matching pictures, numerals and number names

· use toys or objects to accurately count out amounts within 20

· practise formation of all of the numbers and number names to 20

· continue to encourage us to find numbers, shapes and patterns in our environment

Literacy

We are continuing to learn our sounds (single phonemes) and will learn all sounds before moving onto the joined phonemes (sh, th, ch, ng …). In school we use the pink magnetic boards every day to help the children to make, blend and read simple CVC (Consonant, vowel consonant) words.

We use the 5 finger strategy – Say it, Make it, Break it, Blend it, Read it, Write it.

Say it – say the word

Make it – with magnetic letters on the pink board

Break it – break the word up by separating the sounds (phonemes)

Blend it – starting at the beginning, move the sounds and blend the sounds

(phonemes) together

Read – read the word aloud

Write it – write the word 2 times, remembering a finger space between each word

Every week we have 3 new common words which we are learning to recognise with increasing accuracy to develop our reading fluency. We are also continuing to develop our phonological awareness. Please continue to share nursery rhymes with us, helping us to learn these and recite these back to you.

How can you help us?

· share different kinds of stories with us (fiction, non-fiction, poems …)

· encourage us to recognise and identify all of the sounds (phonemes) that have been taught.

· practise the correct formation of all of the phonemes – doorwayonline.org is a super interactive resource for letter and number formation and you have a copy of the formation rhymes we use in school.

· encourage us to sound out and blend sounds (phonemes) together to read words.

· encourage us to recognise and read all common words which have been taught with increasing accuracy to develop fluency in reading.

· encourage us to identify words in our environment

Learning Across the Curriculum

Social Science

Throughout January we have a whole school focus on Scotland. Primary 1 will be focusing on Scottish weather. We will then move onto our new topic in February. People in the Past – back in time to the 80s, 90s and 00s. If you have any artefacts from this time that you would be willing to let us borrow for a couple of days, please let the office know.

RME

This term we will be learning about welcoming a baby. We will be making a class baby board. If you have any baby photos of your child that you would be happy to share, you can email these to the office for the attention of P1 teaching staff – many thanks.

As always, thank you for your continued support.

Miss Cassidy, Mrs Mark and Mrs Lafferty
