Week 1 at Heathery Knowe PS and Nursery

Welcome to the first Head Teacher blog of the new session. Over the next few weeks this will change to the ‘HK Weekly News’, featuring photographs of learning and  articles by children as well as news and updates about the school and nursery.

Recovery staffing

The Scottish Government have funded an extra teacher at Heathery Knowe PS this year to support the recovery curriculum. The school has used this to provide each teacher with an extra half day to teach individuals and small groups in class. Miss Meek, Mrs Kerr and Miss Houldsworth will provide this cover and are focusing on the development of Science and Music. Nursery has an allocation of a teacher one day a week to support the recovery curriculum in Early Years.

Early Years

We are delighted to welcome Mrs Stewart to the nursery until the end of October. Mrs Stewart is an ‘Excellence and Equity Lead Officer’ and will help the nursery team  with continuous improvement.

Exit Gates

Children in Rooms 1-3 (P1-2) have been leaving using the flower pot garden gates. Following feedback from parents and close monitoring, it has become clear that it is too congested making it difficult to socially distance and ensure each child meets their adult safely.

From Monday, children will continue to enter through the flower pot garden gate but will leave through their own classroom door. There will be signs to direct adults to the correct door to collect their child.

Car Park

Please do not leave your engine idling if you are stopped at school. If you are getting out of the car, please use a parking bay. This protects children’s health and ensures they are safe.

Swimming

This year Primary 5, 6 and 7 will participate in a block of swimming lessons as part of part of the PE programme. Primary 7 are the first group to participate and will attend every Thursday afternoon until the end of November.

Children’s mobile phones

We understand that many parents provide their child with a mobile phone for safety. There is no need for a child to have a mobile phone out during the school day. If your child brings a phone to school, please remind them that it should be kept in their bag or pocket all day. It cannot be used at break times and taking photographs or videos is strictly prohibited.

Supported Study

Primary 7 pupils are welcome to stay for supported study in Numeracy on a Thursday evening. The sessions aim to revise teaching covered during remote learning and ensure each child has the best opportunity to leave in June having achieved second level of the Numeracy and Mathematics Curriculum.

Hugo – Post

Children and staff are excited with the launch of Hugo-Post. Staff members will post positive notes about learning, certificates, house tokens and golden tokens into the post box. Each Friday, Primary 5 will deliver the post around classes.

Thank you for your continued support.

Kind regards

Kirsty Duff

Heathery Knowe Nursery – Welcome to session 2022/2023

I hope all families have had a restful Summer break and are looking forward to the new session. The staff team is looking forward to welcoming everyone back today.  I am writing to update you about how the nursery will operate this session.

Staffing

Mrs O’Sullivan,  Depute Head Teacher, oversees the Nursery curriculum and all learning experiences offered to children. Mrs Ashcroft is Acting Team Leader until Ms McPherson returns to work.

Children arriving and leaving nursery

The normal session times for the nursery will be 8.45am-2.45pm. If you need Early Learning and Childcare provision outwith these times, please speak with Mrs Ashcroft.

Children do not need to attend for full sessions each day. If  you would prefer that your child attends nursery for a half day on some occasions, please let Mrs Ashcroft know and this can be part of their routine.

The car park is normally busy at drop off and pick up times and I kindly request that you park in a bay rather than drop off area if at all possible, The drop off area is used by families of school pupils to ensure children can get out of the car and straight onto the pavement safely.

All children will come in the main door and staff will be present to greet children.

Lunch and snack

Children will have lunch between 11.30-12.15pm in the school dining hall.  We encourage all children to try school lunches as they are balanced and fulfilling meals in the middle of the nursery day.  Water is available throughout the day and milk is also provided at lunch.

Fruit and yogurt will be available for an afternoon snack.

Quiet time

Children will have an opportunity to nap during the day if required. Please let staff know if your child normally has a nap and you would like this to continue. There is a planned quiet time after lunch while children return from the dining hall and brush their teeth ready for the afternoon session.

Key Workers

Each Key Worker has responsibility for up to 8 children in the nursery and will be the main contact for regular updates.

If there are any concerns or comments about your child’s experience in nursery, please contact Mrs Ashcroft in the first instance. As Team Leader, she is in the playroom every day and best placed to resolve any concerns. I am the main senior leadership team contact for Nursery to Primary 2 and will work with Mrs Ashcroft and families to discuss any concerns about your experience or additional support needs.

Thank you for your continued support. I look forward to welcoming children to Nursery.

Kind regards

Kirsty Duff

Leaving school at the end of the day

Parents can access the school grounds from 3pm to meet children exiting classes. Children in Primary 1 and 2 will be allowed to leave with an older sibling if the parent has telephoned the school to give permission. Otherwise, children in Primary 1 and 2 will not be allowed to leave without an adult.

Breakfast Club

Breakfast club runs daily from 8.15am – 8.45am.

Children arriving from 8.40am onwards will be offered toast to go.

Children can have a packed lunch, home lunch or school lunch each day.

If your child is a home lunch, please let the office know. P1-4 children need to be collected from the office for home lunches. P5-7 children will be allowed to walk home with parental permission.

Children in Primary 1-5 are entitled to a free school meal.  However, only children with a means tested benefit to school meals will receive free milk. It is 20p per day to buy milk.

Heathery Knowe PS is a cash free school. If you have any issues with your parent pay log in, please contact Mrs Rankin in the school office.

New Primary One parents will be provided with Parent Pay log in information at the start of term.

School Uniform

There is no change to the school uniform requirements for children at Heathery Knowe PS. Please ensure that all items of clothing are labelled clearly.

The uniform consists of:

  • safe waterproof shoes that can be worn while playing and learning outdoors
  • grey trousers or skirt / pinafore
  • blue shirt or polo shirt
  • tie
  • grey or maroon cardigan or jumper.

The PE kit consists of:

  • dark coloured shorts
  • blue polo shirt / tee shirt
  • gym shoes

All children are asked to bring:

  • indoor shoes – This is normally their gym shoes which are worn each day. Indoor shoes must have a hard sole as they will be worn outdoors in the event of evacuation.
  • waterproofs-  Ideally a waterproof jacket, trousers and wellingtons. Some younger pupils may prefer a splash suit. Children will play outdoors on rainy days to ensure classrooms are ventilated and children have access to fresh air each day.
  • spare socks – Please pop a spare pair of socks into your child’s bag in case they are required.

Resources

  • Children should bring a school bag each day. The bag should be waterproof to ensure all resources are protected.
  • Children may bring a water bottle. Please ensure it is easy to fill and is clearly labelled with their name.
  • Hand sanitiser is available throughout the school. There is no need for your child to bring their own sanitiser to school.

Please note that no items of clothing, bags or pencil cases should promote  any football teams or display logos that may be offensive to others.

Mrs Munn, Mr Loveday and Mrs MacOwan are teaching core curricular areas of PE, ICT and Modern Languages in addition to other continuing subject areas.

Small Group Teaching Mathematics and Numeracy

To raise attainment in Numeracy and Maths and provide the highest level of support in this area, Primary 3-7 children benefit from smaller group teaching in maths. Two teachers are allocated to each stage and P3-7 children participate in Numeracy and Mathematics from 9.15-10.30am.

Positive Alternative Thinking Strategies (PATHS)

The PATHS® Programme for Schools is a universal, evidence-based, social and emotional learning schools programme for 4-11 year olds which empowers all children to develop the fundamental social and emotional learning skills which will enable them to make positive choices throughout life.

At Heathery Knowe Primary School, PATHS is taught across all stages (Primary 1-7) on a Tuesday at 11.45am. To ensure we continue to build friendships across year groups, we teach this according to stage rather than within classes.

PATHS groups are taught by the following teachers

Primary 1 – Mrs MacOwan and Mrs O’Sullivan (DHT)
Primary 2 – Miss Deans and Miss Houldsworth
Primary 3 – Mrs McGee and Miss Gayne
Primary 4 – Mrs Caldwell and Mrs French (covered by Miss Gayne)

Week 39 at Heathery Knowe PS and Nursery Class

This is the final update of session 2020/2021 and an opportunity to reflect on a challenging but rewarding session for pupils and staff.

Our children have been outstanding, showing their ability to adapt to the restrictions imposed by Covid 19. Throughout the year they have shown resilience and commitment while learning at home and flexibility and understanding while learning in school. I am very proud of the children attending Heathery Knowe PS and all that they have achieved. The children shared their views on the school this week with 95% of pupils agreeing or strongly agreeing that staff support them to do the best they can both in learning and personal development. 92% of pupils strongly agree or agree that staff treat all pupils fairly and with respect and 92% indicating that there are adults in school that they feel they can speak to if they are worried or upset. There have been improvements in all areas over the course of the last two years as the school embeds its values of, ‘be safe, be kind, be ready’ at all times.

We are very grateful for the support of parents / carers and wider family members over the past school session. As the Head Teacher, I speak on behalf of all staff when I acknowledge the commitment that parents have shown the school when supporting their child(ren) to learn remotely and the understanding of the restrictions imposed on school by Covid 19. Thank you for the support shown to the school with improvements in the school grounds and charity and fundraising ventures. It is all appreciated and ensures the children have a breadth and depth of experience in school.  Please continue to keep in close contact with the school with any comments, concerns or compliments as we continue to improve the experience of children attending Heathery Knowe PS and Nursery Class.

None of this could have been possible without the commitment and professionalism of staff working at Heathery Knowe PS and Nursery Class. Staff working in education had to change and adapt their teaching methodology and methods of communicating as we moved into a virtual teaching environment. The staff at Heathery Knowe PS and Nursery embraced the challenge and provided continuity of learning as they moved between in school and remote learning and this was recognised as good practice by Her Majesty’s Inspectors when they interacted with the school as part of the national scrutiny of remote learning.

The team work and shared commitment to Heathery Knowe learners was evident in abundance this week as we worked together to welcome new Primary 1 learners and celebrate the achievements of Primary 7 learners preparing to leave. I feel very privileged to lead a dedicated, forward thinking and dynamic team where the children are at the centre of every decision.

Unfortunately, we need to say goodbye to Mr Currie who will continue his career in another school. Miss Harper will return to Cathkin Primary as DHT there. I would like to thank Miss Harper for her depth of experience and knowledge she has shared with the Nursery Team as they prepare to move towards full time hours in the Nursery Class. Miss Gordon will remain based at Heathery Knowe PS but will provide cover across South Lanarkshire Council.

Thank you for your continued support. I hope you have a fun filled and restful summer and look forward to welcoming all children back to school on Monday 16th August 2021 at 9am.

Kind regards

Kirsty Duff

Week 38 at Heathery Knowe PS and Nursery

It is hard to believe we are entering the last full week of the Summer term before finishing up for the holidays. Children are continuing to work very hard in class to complete learning activities, achieve curricular benchmarks and round off areas of work.

’The Big Write’

Normally children would spend part of an afternoon in their new class with the new teacher before the end of term. This year it is not possible to run this event as a result of Covid restrictions. As an alternative, children will write a letter to their new teacher with important information about themselves and their learning. Teachers will also write to their new pupils and this will be shared with children on Monday 21st June.

Primary 1 Induction

All new Primary 1 children are invited to attend the school playground at 3.30pm on Wednesday and Thursday next week to participate in transition activities. It is not possible for parents to remain with their children during the event but there will be a space to wait nearby.

Photographs

All children who had their photographs taken this week should have brought home a photograph slip in the brown envelope with the class information. Please register on the website and set up an account. By Monday, parents should be able to view and order any photographs that they would like to purchase. Photographs ordered by Wednesday 16th June will be delivered to the school for distribution before the end of term.

Improving our school

Schools are continuously improving organisations. Each year, parents views about the school are sought and this informs improvement. If you have not already done so, please use the link below to share your views of Heathery Knowe PS:

https://forms.gle/1h41V9mrEcpqfcpm7

Summer Lunch Club

Heathery Knowe PS will remain open over the summer for children and families who would benefit from Summer Lunch Club. This is a free resource for families identified by the school based on individual circumstances. It is not a general childcare resource. If your child would benefit from this provision, please contact the school to speak with Mrs French.

Primary 7 Assembly

Parents are unable to attend the leaver assembly but it will be streamed live using a link to Microsoft Teams.  We hope you will be able to join us on Friday afternoon as we wish our Primary 7 pupils a fond farewell as they move on to secondary education.  More details on how to join will be available on Twitter at the start of the week.

Thank you for your continued support.

Kind regards

Week 35 at Heathery Knowe Primary School and Nursery Class

The children and staff have enjoyed another very busy week of learning at Heathery Knowe PS. We received updated guidance around Nursery – P1 transitions and P7-S1 transitions. Details of planned events will be issued next week.

Smarties Chore Challenge

Thank you to everyone who has already returned the smartie tube after completing the chore challenge. The challenge finishes on Thursday 28th May and all filled smartie tubes should be returned to school by then.

Thank you to all families for your support with this fundraising venture.

Sunflower Walk

The children are invited to participate in a sponsored Sunflower Walk to raise funds for Kilbryde Hospice. Each class has an allocated time slot on Monday or Tuesday next week. Children can wear jogging bottoms and trainers to school for this event. Children are also invited to wear something yellow (jumper, tee shirt, hair band etc) whilst participating in the walk.

Photographs

Unless Public Health guidance  changes, photographers will be allowed to take class, family and individual photographs outside during the month of June. There needs to be a minimum number of parents interested in having their child’s photograph taken in order to book the photographer.

Please return the slip sent home with your child on Friday to indicate whether you are interested in your child’s photograph being taken.

Best Start Grants

The Scottish Government provide support to families who meet the criteria through Best Start Grants. The Best Strat Grant is three payments per child at the point of pregnancy/ birth, start of nursery and then school age payment.

You can find out if you are eligible to apply using the following link:

Week 34 at Heathery Knowe PS and Nursery Class

The outcomes of placing requests into the school have now been shared with parents and we are delighted to be welcoming around 40  Primary One learners to school in August 2021.  The staff are working together over the next few weeks to plan classes for all children in August 2021.

Class Organisation

The teachers and leadership team are working together to organise classes for next session. There is often some anxiety about the process and questions about how we reach decisions about how a class group is made up. I anticipate class groups will be shared by 10th June. Please bear in mind that teachers move between stages and it would be helpful if you could discourage your children from assuming who their teacher(s) will be based on the stage they are teaching this year.

I would like to take this opportunity to provide an outline of the process at our school.

  • The first step is always to review our school roll with South Lanarkshire Council. Colleagues at Headquarters advise us of the number of classes and teachers for the following session. This process takes place from January – May and often  changes as new families move into or out of the area.
  • The identification of teachers taking Primary 1 classes is always shared earlier so that visits to partner nurseries and induction processes can take place. Mrs MacOwan, Mrs Hughes and Mr Loveday will teach Primary 1 pupils next year.
  • Our classes are organised initially using literacy working groups as a guide. Pupils who are attaining similar levels of literacy and working at a similar pace will progress as a group. This means pupils from two different classrooms may come together to form a group for the following year.
  • We then consider how each class is made up using the size of the groups as a guide along with our knowledge of the pupils. Groups going into composite classes are not identified because children are not working at the expected levels.  For example, if your child is a P3 pupil and placed in a composite P3/2 class, this is not because they are struggling with learning and require to revisit concepts taught in P2. Similarly, if you have a P2 pupil going into a P3/2 composite class, this is not because they require the challenge of the P3 curriculum.
  • Finally, we consider the draft classes to ensure no pupils are separated from all of their friends or socially isolated. Current class teachers flag up any issues using their knowledge of pupils and social groups and small tweaks are made.
  • Class lists are then finalised and shared.

This process takes place every year and we spend a lot of time ensuring that the class groups are organised to provide the best opportunities for learning and teaching at each stage. I trust that you recognise that the robust process means we have fully considered your child’s learning and social needs and made a professional decision about classes.

Further information is available using the following link:

Class Structure 2021 / 2022

The final class organisation arrangement for Heathery Knowe PS has been submitted  to SLC Headquarters and this is the arrangement we are planning for. Please note this may be subject to change if there is a significant increase in the school roll as classes are close to being full to capacity at all stages.

Room 1 – Primary 1 with Mrs Hughes and Mrs MacOwan
Room 2 – Primary 1/2 with Mr Loveday
Room 3 – Primary 2 with Miss Deans
Room 4 – Primary 3 with Mrs McGee
Room 5 – Primary 3/4 with Mrs Gray
Room 6 – Primary 4 with Mrs Kane
Room 7 – Primary 5 with Miss Inglis
Room 8 – Primary 6 with Mrs Spence
Room 9 – Primary 6 with Miss Harris and Newly Qualified Teacher*
Room 10 – Primary 7 with Miss Wharton

Flexible teachers – Miss Houldsworth, Mrs Caldwell and Miss Harris.

*The allocation of newly qualified teachers to the local authority has still to be confirmed therefore Room 9 is a provisional allocation.

Thank you for your continued support as we plan for next session.

Kind regards

Week 33 at Heathery Knowe PS and Nursery Class

The Summer term is always very busy as we celebrate the end of the school year and prepare for the next one.

Heathery Knowe Nursery Class

From August 2021, the Nursery Class will offer full time provision to children. Over the next week, we will be consulting with parents about the start time and pick up time for Nursery pupils to take into account congestion, parking and safety.

The Nursery has reduced its capacity from 80 part time placements to 40 full time placements and is currently full to capacity.  Unfortunately for many of our families with siblings in the school, the youngest children were not placed at Heathery Knowe Nursery. Transfer requests can be made so that children are considered when a place becomes available.

Full details on how to make a transfer request in South Lanarkshire can be found using  the following link:

https://www.southlanarkshire.gov.uk/info/200184/early_learning_and_childcare/556/transferring_to_another_nursery

We would be grateful for any donations of yogurt pots, sunflower seeds and compost so that all children have an opportunity to plant and grow a sunflower without there being any charge to participate.
Covid Mobile Testing Units
NHS Lanarkshire has requested the following information is highlighted within the community.

Appointments for those with or without symptoms can be made by visiting Coronavirus (COVID-19) | NHS Lanarkshire (scot.nhs.uk) or by calling 0800 028 2816.

Alternatively there is a asymptomatic test site in Larkhall which is available for anyone without symptoms to pop in and get a test, no appointment necessary, this is based at Larkhall leisure centre and is available 7 days a week 9.30-5.30.

There is now a facility to collect a test kit from various locations, these can be found on the map https://maps.test-and-trace.nhs.uk or they can be ordered online at https://www.gov.uk/order-coronavirus-rapid-lateral-flow-tests or by calling 119 to order home delivery.

Thank you for your continued support.

Week 32 at Heathery Knowe PS and Nursery Class

The final term has got off to a very settled start with children engaging in a wide range of learning activities. There are more opportunities to learn outdoors this term which will help to reduce the risk of transmission of Covid 19 within classrooms. Please ensure your child comes to school ready to learn in all weather.

Summer Menu

The Summer menu was launched in the cafeteria this week. I would appreciate if you could remind your child(ren) of some of the changes to help them select a lunch they will enjoy everyday. The green menu option is always a vegan/vegetarian option. For example, the green menu on Thursday was sausage and potatoes however it is a vegan sausage and may taste a little different. The two hot options each day are one option containing meat and one without. The red tray is a cold option (baguette / pasta pot).

Charity Event

Each year we support local charities to encourage children to be kind and develop into responsible local citizens. This session, EK Food Bank, Salvation Army Christmas Appeal  and Kilbryde Hospice are our charity partners.

In October we collected food for the local foodbank as part of the Harvest celebration.  Thank you to all children and staff who supported this event.  In December staff contributed to the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal to ensure all children in East Kilbride woke up to presents on Christmas morning.

This term, we turn our attention to Kilbryde Hospice. Kilbryde Hospice provides compassionate, specialist palliative care to people with life limiting progressive illnesses and to their relatives and carers in South Lanarkshire.

The children in the school and nursery will all be invited to take part in a sponsored Sunflower Walk within the school grounds, This will be arranged to take into account Covid 19 restrictions at the time of the event. It will take place on Monday 24th May and is a fantastic start to Sports Week.  There will be an opportunity to plant a sunflower seed for a small donation then bring the pot home and watch it grow over the Summer holiday.

The pupil House Captain team will contact local businesses to arrange water and fruit for the event.

Thank you to Miss Deans and Mrs Spence for organising this event.

PTC Fundraising Events

The restrictions of Covid 19 has made fundraising more difficult for the PTC as the normal events have not been able to go ahead. All funds raised by the PTC are used by the committee to directly benefit children and widen their experiences. As a school, we are very grateful for the support offered and it enables us to provide the children with resources and experiences that we could not afford using the core budget.

The PTC Scavenger Hunt raised £156. Thank you to everyone who supported this event.

The next event for PTC fundraising is the ‘Smarties Chore Challenge’. Each child will be given a tube of smarties by the PTC. Once the children have enjoyed the smarties, they are encouraged to do small chores around the house for some loose change to fill up the tube and then donate the money raised to the PTC.  Children are welcome to fill it with a mix of any coin that fits inside the tube (1p, 5p etc) and there is no need for the tube to be filled on return. The PTC is very grateful for any donations that can be made.

If your child cannot eat smarties (special diet, food intolerance etc), please contact the school as soon as possible so that an alternative arrangement can be made.

Friends of Heathery Knowe Charity Setup

The PTC and staff are working collaboratively to explore the feasibility of setting up a ‘Friends of Heathery Knowe’ charity. This would allow access to fundraising opportunities where charity status is required.  If you have previously served on the board of a registered charity, have experience setting up a charity or have knowledge of the process through work, we would really appreciate if you could contact Miss Wharton to offer some advice.

If you are interested in being part of the charity set up team, please let Miss Wharton know by emailing gw09whartonkimberley@glow.sch.uk

East Kilbride Litter Picking Group

The East Kilbride Litter Picking group has over 1200 members.  Over the past 6 weeks the group has collected nearly 1000 large red bags of rubbish, you may have seen these filled bags on streets and parklands around East Kilbride.

If Covid restrictions allow, the school will support the campaign and participate in local litter picking as part of the ‘Great British Spring Clean’.

Thank you for your continued support.

Kind regards

Kirsty Duff
