‘Making It Work’ Programme for Parents/ Parent Council

Parental Employability Support

The Council ‘s employability service delivers a range of programmes to support parents into work. To be eligible for support parents must fall under one of the priority groups below:

  • Lone parent families
  • Families with a disabled adult or child
  • Larger families (with 3 or more children)
  • Families with children under the age of 1
  • Families with mothers under the age of 25
  • Ethnic Minority families

The Making it Work programme is delivered by Routes to Work South and provides a blend of one-to-one support and training. All parents are paired with a dedicated keyworker who will support them to develop an action plan designed around their needs. This can include:

  • Financial advice on benefits, debt management and better off in work calculations
  • Personal development and confidence building
  • Access to health supports including counselling and therapies
  • Job specific training
  • Work placements and volunteering
  • CV building and interview skills including interview clothing

Upskilling as targeted at working parents who are in low-waged, part-time or insecure employment and need support to improve their income from employment. This could include access to training and qualifications that lead to promotion or training and support to secure a new job with increased earnings.

The Supporting Families programme is a pilot delivered in partnership with Clyde Gateway and currently available to targeted schools within Cambuslang, Rutherglen and Larkhall. The programme is specifically targeted at parents with children in the nursery to P1 transition and provides confidence building, community based activities and health and wellbeing support to parents who are at an early stage in their employability journey. Parents are able to access after-school childcare through South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture.
