Virtually Safe, Virtually Sound Conference

November 16, 2017 by Mr Spence | 0 comments

On Wednesday the 15th November, normal classes were suspended in Whalsay Secondary to run a special conference focused on Internet Safety.  S3 pupils have been helping to organise this conference in their Wider Achievement lesson on Friday afternoons, along with teachers and colleagues from Youth Services.  They had also conducted an survey of P7-S4 pupils use of social media and presented the findings of this study at the conference.

The conference featured workshops and presentations from a number of different visitors to the school on various aspects of online safety including improv comedy performer, Marjolein Robertson.

The organisers of the conference put on a Parents’ Event in conjunction with the Parent Council.  This took place the same day at 6.45 in the Primary Hall.  Parents had the opportunity to hear about the S3 survey and advice from a police representative about keeping children safe online.  The presentation lasted for approximately one hour with the Parents’ Council providing refreshments and the opportunity to speak informally about the issues raised and get practical help with setting security settings on phones and devices.

While the parents’ event was running, there was a workshop available for P5-7 pupils in one of the Primary classrooms giving age appropriate support to them around online safety.

Whalsay School would like to thank Kate Gabb and Rona Arthur from Child & Adult Protection, Lesley Gray from SIC Youth Services and Rachel from Police Scotland for all their help with the event.
