Boccia

Today P1 took part in their first Boccia session. Boccia is a seated sport where you have to throw the ball without lifting up your bottom! It was lots of fun! The class started by throwing the balls to be nearest the wall and then progressed to aiming their balls inside the circle of cones.

“You had to throw da balls and get them near a wall. I liked throwing the balls.” Maisie

“My favourite bit about Boccia was trying to get near the wall and when the balls went a bit wonky. I got my ball in the cones and I loved it!” Freya

“I liked throwing the balls. They were heavy, but I hit the wall.” Joanna

“I liked baalin da baas, it was good!” Freddie

“I liked it. It was easy to hit the wall, but tricky to get it inside the circle.” Max

Christmas Jumper and Dinner

Christmas Jumper and Dinner day was the 15th December this year. In the morning, Primary 1 were busy making Christmas tree crowns to wear for their Christmas dinner. They took part in a Lego and construction challenge to build Christmas trees and they also decorated tree pictures they made from long and short strips of green paper for maths. Here are some photos from the morning activities and dinner.

Robin Robin

Last week P1 had a ‘Robin Robin’ day based on the short film with the same name on Netflix. It was fine and dry in the morning so Miss Irvine, Mrs Irvine and Mrs Hutchison took the bairns for a walk to the shop. On the way down to the shop they had a list of items to look out for on a nature checklist, they saw most thing on the list – spider webs, pointy leaves, flowers, berries, twigs but didn’t see any robins.

At the shop, some bairns went in and to help Mrs Hutchison buy ingredients for our bird cakes. They bought rice crackers, peanut butter and birdseed to make the birdcakes and everybody got one home to hang in their garden. Hopefully some of Santa’s robins will come and eat them. On the way back up to school we saw a helicopter, some bairns thought they could see Santa inside!

Space

Primary 1 have been learning about space and how scientists believe the universe was created. We begun by thinking about their homes being in Whalsay and then found Whalsay on planet Earth. We looked further afield to find out about the Solar System and most of P1 were amazed to learn that the Sun was their very own star!  We talked about stars and how they could make pictures, called constellations, in the night sky and then had fun making our own constellations using glow in the dark stars!

Children In Need

Primary 1 could choose to come to school dressed in their pyjamas today. They discussed what Children in Need was and why we raise money to help other children during circle time and then took part in a draw-a-long to draw Pudsey. Everyone was very proud of their pictures!

A Busy First Week

It is great to have everyone back in P1 after the holidays. It has been a busy week and the class have had fun creating stories and characters based on Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s Room on the Broom.  As well as thinking about the rhyming words included in the story, the children thought about what kind of character they would include if there had been another page. We had suggestions of penguins, hedgehogs, monsters, rabbits and many more!  The children also created a story about what kind of broom they would create, who would be on it and where it would go.  The children painted their favourite characters from the story, paying attention to colour, shape, line and patterns from the book.

The children also had fun with Halloween themed play areas this week.

Symmetry

As part of our practical math, we have been learning about symmetry. We also used paint to create symmetrical pictures. The children took responsibility to take pictures of their own learning today, well done everyone!

The 3 Little Pigs

As part of our learning about p and i and the number three, we were learning about the three little pigs.

We looked at the story and then created houses for our characters that would stand up to a gust of wind. Everyone though carefully about what to use and measured to make sure their character could fit inside.
