Primary One were all dressed in something red today for Comic Relief.

The children really enjoyed taking part in the LEGO challenges as part of Comic Relief. They had to build habitats for each of the characters. Here are their creations…

World Book Day

This week we have been doing a lot of activities on the Supertato book. We have been working on our fine motor skills by lacing string around Evil Pea and the vegetables, building Lego jails to capture Evil Pea and making our own Supertato crafts. We also made Wanted posters for Evil Pea and wrote really good descriptions.

Yesterday, we all dressed up for World Book Day. We wrote about our costumes and watched an Author’s Live about Julia Donaldson then drew the Gruffalo.

In the afternoon we shared stories with Primary 5/6 and it was really good fun. You can see their World Book Day blog post here

Languages Week

Primary 1 have been busy learning about flags. We listed to a song on youtube about Flags, played a matching flag game and also made flags using Lego. With the Lego, we also built famous landmarks from around the world. We compared the colours and pattern of the Shetland and Portuguese flag and also painted some different 2 and 3 colour flags. This week we are going to type up names of countries at computing to go with our flags

Primary 1 enjoyed looking at the Food around the World PowerPoint and sounding out the names and dishes from countries. We realised we enjoyed different food from all over the world!

In music, we sang a German Song called Paule Puhmanns Paddelboot, we can say Guten Tag and Auf Wiedersehen which is good afternoon and goodbye in German.

On the class Whiteboard we have listened to different stories from around the world from this website and we enjoyed looking at Google Earth. One day we zoomed in on Whalsay , Portugal and the North Pole! We also enjoyed playing an online game called Pirate Bunnies

Burns Night

Primary 1 have been learning about celebrations and as part of that, have been learning about Robert Burns.

Today we held a Burns Supper. The children helped to prepare the vegetables for the feast, talking about textures and smells, and learning about safety.

Once everything was ready the class helped to set up the tables. We were all very excited as it was the first time some of us had tasted haggis, neeps and tatties!  We said the Selkirk Grace and tucked in! Everyone had a peerie try of something on their plate and it was amazing how many people enjoyed all of the elements.

Afterwards we all danced to Auld Lang Syne.

Talking and Listening

This term in primary one we are taking part in a ‘Show and Tell’ session every Friday. This is a great way to develop key skills to become good listeners and talkers. This week we were concentrating on looking at our audience when we talk and also ways to show we are listening. It was great to see everyone’s interpretations of the topic, “What makes me happy…”. Some people took in props, which were kept in bags and returned to bags afterwards to keep them safe. It was great to see the children begin to talk to larger groups and also convey important information. Questioning was modelled by the teacher and some children picked up on this to ask really good questions at the end. Well done everyone!

Play Projects

Primary 1 had fun this afternoon completing a play project related to our health and wellbeing focus of babies and growth.

They used their knowledge of what babies need to make, build, draw or write something a baby could use. We had lots of rattles and toys being made!

They had to use the secret code of ‘the’ or ‘I’ to transform their play project as these are our tricky word focus in reading this week.
