Below are some ideas to help practise skills with your child if they are isolating due to Covid-19.
Phonics
- Practise the sounds in your child’s sound book. Look for these sounds in books, packaging and in the surrounding environment.
- Use shaving foam, playdough, paint, colouring pens to practice mark making and formation of the letters covered.
- You can use You Tube to access Jolly phonics songs and stories that accompany the sounds we have covered.
Reading
- Storyline Online – Home This website is great for listening to stories online.
- Share books with your child, Oxford Owl has a parents area with useful information.
- Education Scotland has a helpful website to support reading at home.
Numeracy

- Let your child help you to count out ingredients and cutlery, pair socks, match items around the home and spot numbers in their surroundings.
- Focus on associating amounts of things to a number; for example ask your child “Can you find 2 pens?” or “Count out 5 raisins” and so on.
- Focus on numbers to 5, then 10 and beyond.
- Education Scotland has lots of helpful ways to support numeracy.
- Sumdog – they must do this independently as the questions adjust to their ability.
Fine Motor Skills
