USEFUL ONLINE LINKS FOR HOME LEARNING

Numeracy Workout – this can be used to practise all maths topics. Pupils are able to work at their own ability level and return to any topics that they find challenging:

https://www.numeracyworkout.co.uk/

Username – soundps
Password – share32

TopMarks is another brilliant website that can be used to practise maths skills. Fractions and decimals would be particularly useful:

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/7-11-years/fractions-and-decimals

Pupils with access to Nessy Spelling should continue to use this resource. This can be done instead of any other spelling activities.

Pupils can access through GLOW:

TedEd:

TedEd is a fantastic resource that can be found in GLOW. Pupils can search the tool bar at the top of their GLOW Launchpad to open it. There are a range of educational talks available on lots of different subjects. There are build in quizzes to challenge pupils

TigTag:

This can be accessed in the same way as TedEd, through GLOW. Pupils will be familiar with TigTag. It is a fantastic resource with different educational clips and science experiments to try. It would be particularly useful for pupils to access the section on plants:

Pupils can also use the following link to access the Food Chain Challenge:

https://toybox.tools.bbc.co.uk/activities/id/gm2zlfh9hq/exitGameUrl/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbc.co.uk%2Fbitesize%2Ftopics%2Fzbnnb9q%2Farticles%2Fz93vdxs/palette/colour-palette-7/language/en-GB/project/blocks-bitesize

NASA has some really fun STEM activities that can be tried at home:

https://www.nasa.gov/stem-at-home-for-students-k-4.html

If pupils have completed any of the writing activities in their home learning pack, I would love if they could share them with me through their GLOW blog. I have really enjoyed reading the stories and book reviews that have already been uploaded. Don’t worry if this is not possible. If pupils have any questions, they can upload them to their GLOW blog and I will answer.

Drama Festival Success

Sound P7 After School Drama Club have recently performed in the Drama Festival. Their performance of Pongwiffy was fabulous and they even took the trophy for best young performer.

Primary 7 recently led a remembrance assembly to classes in P4-P6. Pupils explained how war has affected different groups of people over the last 100 years. They explained why people commemorate armistice and how remembrance events were borne from the end of WW1. Pupils took the opportunity to read some of the creative and vivid war poetry they have been working on in class.

Primary 7a were once again in the great outdoors with Pete Richardson. Here we learned more about the life of John Muir and how, after he was temporarily blinded in a factory accident, he decided to walk from the Canadian border down to the Gulf of Mexico. Everyone agreed that he was a very inspiring man and are keen to find out more about his life.

We also learned how important shelter and heat are to survival and were given the opportunity to eat our lunch around an open fire. In the afternoon the class split into groups and built their own, very impressive, shelters. I think John Muir would have been proud at what they were able to achieve in 45 minutes! There was great deal of team work and satisfaction.

At the start of the day Pete challenged everyone to try something different and to learn something new. This was certainly achieved and everyone went home tired but with happy smiles on their faces!

This week Primary 7 have been busy raising money for Children in Need. Pupils were very enterprising and came up with lots of different ideas to raise money for this special charity. There were guess the footballer puzzles, word searches and art competitions. This accompanied the traditional bake and toy sale and the less traditional funky nail and hair salon. There was even a guess the creature game! It was a lot of fun and over £800 was raised over 2 days! Well done Primary 7!

Recently our class took part in a fantastic outdoor education day with Pete Richardson. The sun wasn’t shining but that didn’t dampen our spirits! Pupils (and staff) really pushed themselves out of their comfort zone and took part in a series of watery challenges. We had to really work together to successfully complete each challenge and show determination. So much fun was had! I think you can see from the happy look on our faces!

Primary 7a have been learning about what life was like in Shetland 100 years ago. This is part of their World War One topic.

During a visit to the Shetland Museum, pupils learned how important crofting and fishing were to Shetland and how wool and knitting was bartered for goods as part of everyday life.

The class was surprised to learn that the first phone came to Lerwick only a few years before the start of World War One. Life was very different!

When the class got back to school they had a go at carding and spinning wool. It was tricky but the class really enjoyed it! Wool was so important to Shetlanders during World War One so pupils were enthusiastic to try spinning it.

Working together to improve outcomes for learners to be the best that they can be.
