RESEARCH VISIT
We were so lucky to get a guided tour of the Research fishing boat. We were amazed by the size of it. It has huge tanks to keep the fish fresh. The wheelhouse was spacious and they had so many large touch screens. We were amazed to find out it cost over 30 million to buy. It was so clean. It was interesting to compare the Research to boats that would have been used years ago.
WORLD BOOK DAY
We visited the nursery and shared books that we enjoyed when we were smaller.
We also took in a favourite book and spoke about it. We saw a great variety of books!
THE BETTY MOUAT STORY
Claire White visited Primary 5 today. She came in to tell us the story of a very brave lady who drifted to Norway in in 1886. Betty had boarded The Columbine and was heading for Lerwick. It should have been a three hour journey but due to the bad weather she was left on the boat alone and she ended up in Norway. She was on the boat foe 9 nine days. She only has a small amount of milk and a couple of biscuits to keep her going. Claire White performed the song that she wrote specially for Betty’s memory.
DRAMA
Izzy is working with us again. We are learning about The Diana whaling boat and we are going to put on a small performance. It is an interesting true story. We can see the memorial to the Diana crew on the pier.
BEARAMY BEAR
Habiba’s mum and sister both work at Tesco. Habiba’s mum works in the bakery. Bearamy could not go in there due to Health and Safety. It is important in the bakery to have a clean environment so no germs can appear.

BEARAMY BEAR
Alexander’s dad works at Sullom Voe. Bearamy couldn’t go into the site as cameras are not allowed. You can see Bearmay Bear wearing a high visability jacket and he id also holding a special pass that is needed to enter Sullom. One photo shows you the sheer size of Sullom Voe.
MERRY CHRISTMAS

AMBULANCE TECHNICIAN VISIT
Stuart Paul visited our class to tell us about his job. He works on an the ambulance. His job is varied and busy. He doesn’t know what kind of incident he will end up at each day. He told the class who they should phone and what they should say on the phone in an emergency. He said if you knew the postcode it makes things much easier. He also taught the class about the recovery position. It is a simple manouvere that can save lives.
MANDARIN
Ms Lan Fang was showing the class how to write charcters with special brushes and special paper. They just used water.
DRUMMING WITH JOY
We started African drumming with Joy. it was great fun!
THE CALCUTTA CUP
Tavish Scott visited today with the Calcutta Cup. It is an important cup in rugby.
BEARAMY BEAR
Tom took Bearamy home with him.
On the first day he went to the Shetland Junior Archery Club. Tom’s dad is a coach. There are a lot of rules to follow for safety. Tom and Jack both go to Archery Club. The day after he went with Tom’s mum she was organising merchandise for the MRI Scanner Appeal. Then he did some book keeping for a shop. A record has to be kept of all the things sold in a shop. There is special book keeping software on the computer. It keeps a record of how well a shop is doing. Then he went to work with Tom’s Dad at the council. Every job is so different and requires different skills.
GENNY AND BEN
This term our topic is a health topic called Keeping Safe. We have been finding out how to keep our minds and bodies healthy. Genny very kindly came to our class and talked about her illness and how Ben her dog supports her. She is Bipolar and Ben is a dog specially trained to help her. He can sense when she is going high or low and he is a special way of alerting her. The class asked excellent questions and were amazed at how special Ben is.
ROAD SAFETY WEEK
This week was Road Safety Week. The theme for Road Safety Week was Step up For Safe Streets. We went on a walk around our local area to look at road signs and markings. We looked at the best places to cross roads. We couldn’t believe how many signs there were in the local area.

We are Children in Need ready! Lovely cakes, books and toys have been donated. Let’s hope we can raise lots!

JUNK ROCKET MODELS
Some great designs and fabulous use of junk!
SHETLAND SPACE CENTRE
We had three visitors to tell us about the Shetland Space Centre. Carol and Yvonne work for the Shetland Space Centre. Kristina was with them and she works and studies at Edinburgh university. The plan is satellites will be put into Space using rocket launchers and special balloons. We found it really interesting and amazing that it will all happen in Unst!
BEARAMY BEAR
Bearamy Bear is visiting different workplaces to find out what they are actually like for our class.
He had an amazing time fitting carpets. We thought you had to be very good at measuring. You also would need to be patient to make sure everything fitted right.
He helped at Ability Shetland. He helped to set up the hall and with craft activities.
Jordan’s mum works at supported Living and Outreach. He was so busy there. His bleeper never stopped. He had to clean the showers, help with the washing, make appointments, send emails, support with medication and shop! We thought to do this job you needed to be organised and caring.
Eilidh took Bearamy home and he visited A&E and DHMarine. A t the hospital he checked machinery, got patient details, looked at an x-ray and put a plaster on a patient. At DHMarine he helped update computers, serve customers and drove a forklift.
To be a nurse in casualty we thought you had to be prepared for any sort of injury or illness. You would have to be confident using all sorts of machinery. You would have to look calm in all situations so you didn’t worry the patients.
Miss Nicholson took Bearamy Bear during the holidays.Miss Nicolson works at Intersport so he helped her get a display window ready. Miss Nicolson is a volunteer for Ability Shetland. Miss Nicolson supports children with needs. Miss Nicolson helps organise fun activities for the children. In the holidays they visited Michael’s Wood and the Aith Leisure Centre. We think it would be a job that gave you a lot of satisfaction. You would have to be very kind and caring. They went on the Northlink boat and they had fun at the Sandveien Neighbourhood Centre.
HOCKEY
In teacher led gym we have been practising hockey skills. Just lately we have been playing short games. One school value has been very much in evidence – Determination!
SPACE WALK
Last Wednesday we walked as far as the Clickimin footpath. We used balloons to represent the planets. We used a trundle wheel to measure the distances between the planets, which had been scaled down. It was a great way to visualise the varied distances.
OREO MOON PHASES
We used Oreos to show the phases of the moon.
FRUIT PLANETS
We used fruit to compare the different sizes of the planets. Saturn and Uranus looked huge.
ROYAL OBSERVATORY
We had two visitors from the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh in our class yesterday. Matt showed us part of the Skylark rocket. A real life rocket that had been 174km in the air. Matt told us that rockets have similar features. They have a nose cone, a body and thrusters. We then created simple rockets from card and paper. We had excellent fun blasting them into the sky! They went some height! Brilliant fun for a Monday!!
ONE OFF WEDNESDAY
Each week one pupil has led the learning in the classroom. They have chosen a topic they are interested in and chosen a way to present the topic. They are practicing their presentation skills. The rest of the class practice their listening skills. The class offers support by saying what was good about the presentation and give one suggestion about how the presentation could be improved.
OUTDOOR CLASSROOM
When the weather has been fine we have enjoyed spending time in the areas around the school. We do the Daily Mile and walk around the school. The Activity Area is used and also the Wildlife Area. It is excellent spaces to do group work, learning to work well with others.
MISSING LINK
Both Primary 5 classes visited Mareel last week to watch the film Missing Link.
Mr. Link is 8 feet tall and covered in fur, but don’t let his appearance fool you… he is funny, sweet, and adorably literal, making him the world’s most lovable legend at the heart of Missing Link. Tired of living a solitary life in the Pacific Northwest, Mr. Link recruits fearless explorer Sir Lionel Frost to guide him on a journey to find his long-lost relatives in the fabled valley of Shangri-La. Along with adventurer Adelina Fortnight, the fearless trio of explorers encounter more than their fair share of peril as they travel to the far reaches of the world to help their new friend. Through it all, the three learn that sometimes you can find a family in the places you least expect.
We all enjoyed it!
SPACE DRAMA
Izzy has been in to do drama. The pupils have been pretending to prepare for a space mission to Mars. They have had fun pretending to be interviewed for the job of an astronaut. They have imagined what it would be like in the space craft.
