Beat, Rhythm & Pitch

We have been continuing to reinforce our sense of steady beat using body percussion and we have also explored the relationship between beat and rhythm. A song that we have learned called ‘Pussycat Pussycat’ gave us an opportunity to learn about a question and answer style of song in music where we kept the beat by tapping while singing the questions and showing the rhythm of the answers by clapping.

We have also been learning about pitch – how high or low a sound is and we have been using our singing voices to match the pitch that we hear. We can also use out hands to show if the pitch is high, middle or low. The song ‘Rain is Falling Down’ is one we have learned that has three different pitches.

After using our hands to show the pitch of the song, we talked about which words in the song were at a high, middle or low pitch and we put them into three different sets of clouds to show how the pitch changed in the song.

Here is a recording of the class showing the pitch with their hand positions while singing ‘Rain is Falling Down’.

Racket Sports

In PE, we have finished the term doing racket activities.  We have used short tennis and badminton equipment so far and will finished tomorrow with table tennis bats and balls.  We started off by developing our hand eye coordination through using beach balls and catching balls in hoops.  We have then spent a week each on the 3 different sports.

Our main focus has been on speed.  In racket sports you have to move quickly for a short distances and be able to stop in control and balance.  We spent a lot of time working on using different foot patterns which will help us coordinate our way quickly around a court.

Games Skills

P2 have been doing games skills in PE with the focus on Gross and Fine Motor Skills.  We learnt that fine motor skills used smaller parts of our bodies like fingers and that gross meant big so gross motor was big body movements.

Dance

We started the year in PE doing a dance block.  We did lots of different little tasks using different themes.  We had to

  • travel in different ways – fast, slow, creep, etc
  • hold still shapes
  • follow a partner
  • move between 2 different actions
  • move like a stream of water, flowing and turning, then freeze, hold and melt
  • be the drip of water off a roof, freeze into an icicle and melt again
  • follow a folk dance
  • move like toys – a clown, dancer, robot and penguin
  • to move with heavy and light movements.

Here we are in action

Time to Talk

One of our school priorities this year is talking and listening. We have been learning about conversations and how to discuss a given topic in a group. Our topics have ranged from “It’s better to be an adult than a child” and “Children should do chores at home” to ” Children should choose their own bedtimes”

Check out the reactions in the photos! We had a few extremely good debates where children were respectful and considerate but managed to put their own points of view across clearly and with good reasoned arguments.

Winter Tree Silhouettes

We were busy making Winter tree silhouette pictures in art last term. We painted large sheets of paper in various shades of blue.

Then we cut these into strips to so we had little rectangles. We arranged the paper using our blue strips with most white nearest the moon, going out in order to our darkest blue strips furthest away.

We then make winter tree silhouettes, being careful to include some of the ground as well. We think they look wonderful around our classroom door.
