Victorian Lerwick Trip

Our final question in our Victorians topic was: What was life like in Victorian Lerwick? We were very lucky to have Mrs Nicholson take our classes on a tour of Lerwick to look for evidence of the Victorians. We also compared old photos of Lerwick to what we could see today.

The Gilbertson Park was opened in Victorian times. The Burgh Road used to also be the end of Lerwick!

The Town Hall and Police Station were built in Victorian times. We looked for clues on the buildings that tell us this.

The street has lots of Victorian buildings on it. We were surprised that the sea used to go all the way up to Harry’s Shop!

Microbit Step Counters

We LOVE using microbits in Primary 6. They are mini computers that you can code. We have used them to display messages, make games and create animations.

In this lesson we created step counters. The microbits have motion sensors so we could programme them to count our steps. We also had the extra challenge of setting a step goal and coding our microbit to react when we reached our step goal. We got to choose and code what our microbits did when we achieved our goal. Some of the microbits played music, displayed an emoji or displayed a message. Here we are testing them out outside.

Victorian Classroom

We have been learning about the Victorians. One of our key questions in our topic was: What was life like for Victorian children?

We have been doing drama activities with Izzy Swanson based around the stories of Oliver Twist and The Little Match Girl to explore this.

We also got to role play a Victorian classroom. Izzy was our teacher and it was very different to a normal day in class! Here we are dressed as Victorian children pretending to be very sad!

Maths Week

This week is Maths Week at Sound School. P6a will be carrying out additional fun activities to support their maths learning. These will include:

  • Mental Maths practise using Numeracy Ninjas
  • Using data and graphs to carry out a heart rate experiment linked to our class topic – The Human Body
  • Maths PE activities
  • Maths in outdoor learning
  • Taking home number notion pack for maths learning at home

Buddying with P2a

We have been working on our leadership and communication skills while buddying with P2a. Our P6s have paired up with a P2 and have been helping them with their reading this week. Our P6s chose a book to share with the P2s and then they listened to the P2s reading their own reading books. Here is what P6 had to say about it:

“It was amazing!”

“It was really fun!”

“We were reading Superworm and having fun.”

“P2s were really good at reading. They did a good job pronouncing big words.”
