Kate visited our school and taught us how to start a fire safely in a survival situation. We used flint and steel which isn’t hot but it creates sparks. We each had a go at lighting a cotton wool ball.
Then we had to safely put the fire out in a bowl of water.
We learnt that whenever you want to light a fire you should ALWAYS have something to put it out with like water or a fire blanket.
We also learnt how to make a Den in less than 5 minutes!
We used climbing rope and tarpaulin. It was tricky tying knots but we enjoyed the challenge.
As part of our Topic we were learning about how to keep ourselves clean.
One of the things we can do is brush our teeth independently. We demonstrated how to brush our teeth properly. Then we wrote instructions about how to do it.
Fun 31
We had Fun 31 with our House Teams. Team Oxna were in the games hall and Lexi and Markus led some games for us. It was great fun!
Scotland Topic
We have been learning about the Loch Ness Monster.
We made clay models of what we think the Loch Ness Monster looks like.
We shared facts with Primary 2 about Snow Leopards because they have been learning about cold places.
We adopted a snow leopard because they are an endangered animal. We also learnt facts about them so we were happy to help Primary 2 with their topic. It was lots of fun pairing up. We had a few younger siblings and it was nice to spend time in each others classrooms.
We enjoyed having a Second year student who was called Miss Leslie.
Miss Leslie planned really fun handwriting lessons. We loved practising our letter formations in different ways.
We had a Maths relay to practise adding up different totals in Money.
In teams we had to race to choose a coloured cone. Each cone had a value and we had to add up our totals. It was good to have team mates to help each other and explain how to find the answer.
We have been learning about light and sound.
We made Globes using balloons, paper mache and long sticks. We added on the continents and used them to explain the earths rotation around the sun. We’ve been learning about day/night, seasons, the earths tilt, leap years and why the sky is blue!
This has been a strange week. I hope you have had some fun at home and been able to enjoy the snowy weather.
Please find below some tasks that you can do if you have a chance this week. Mrs Paul has also set some Art themed tasks. I hope you enjoy them and I look forward to seeing you all soon.
We’ve had a great first week getting ready for the Scalloway Fire Festival.
We loved meeting the Jarl squad and trying on their sheilds , axes and helmets.
We’ve also been practising our Shetland Dialect. We wrote Poems about the Fire festival. We had to use nouns, verbs and adjectives in dialect. Here is some of our work. The rest are on display in the corridor.
