Basketball Skills and Teamwork to Finish the Term

Over the last three weeks, our pupils have been enjoying a block of basketball lessons as we round off the term.

During these sessions, the children have been developing their core basketball skills, focusing on passing, dribbling and shooting. Through a variety of fun activities and games, they have had opportunities to practise these techniques before applying them in more competitive situations. This has allowed them to improve their confidence, decision-making and teamwork while enjoying the excitement of game play.

Alongside the physical skills, we have also continued to focus on the Significant Aspect of Learning Respect and Tolerance. Pupils have been encouraged to show respect for teammates, opponents and officials, while demonstrating tolerance by supporting one another, accepting different abilities and working positively together. These benchmarks have been an important part of every lesson and have helped create a positive and inclusive learning environment.

It has been fantastic to see the progress the children have made, both in their basketball abilities and in the way they work and interact with others. Well done to everyone for their effort, enthusiasm and sportsmanship throughout the block. 🏀👏

Natural Dyes

In class, we have been learning about the uses of plants. We experimented with some plant material by creating our own natural dyes. First we hypothesised what colour dye each plant would make. After that, we created our dye, soaked some cotton with a fixer (salt) and then dyed our material.

We also were lucky enough to be visited by a local knitting business owner, Donna Smith, who uses natural dyes to colour her products. She told us all about the process of her using local plant materials to dye her knitwear.

P7 Are Composers!

For our last week in music we worked hard to complete our compositions for the instrumental section of the ‘I’ve Got the Back To School Blues’ song.

We used notes from the pentatonic scale for our melodies and some of us worked with partners to create a joint composition.

Below are audio clips of our finished pieces.

Back To School Blues Instrumental

Below are two audio files of the class performing the song ‘Back to School Blues’ an instrumental section played on xylophones and glockenspiels.

Our next step is to compose our own melodies for the instrumental section.

We’ve Got the Back to School Blues!

In Music this term we have been learning about the Blues genre which originated in the southern parts of America among African Americans at the turn of the 20th Century.  It started in the region of the Mississippi River and as the people migrated north looking for work, they took their music with them and the Delta Blues changed and developed into the Chicago Blues. From there, the Blues spread across America and beyond.

The class recently learned a song called ‘I’ve Got the Back to School Blues’ and they loved it so much, they even came up with their own choreography and added some air guitar too!

PE Update – Hockey

This term, we are focusing on invasion games, with hockey and basketball forming the main areas of learning. We began with a week of skills development to build the core attributes required for success in both sports. These included cooperation, dodging, weaving, attacking, defending, communication, and decision-making.

We then moved on to hockey. Throughout this block, pupils have been building their confidence in controlling the ball, passing accurately, and dribbling effectively. They have had regular opportunities to practise and refine these skills before applying them in fun, competitive games. As the unit progresses, pupils will continue to develop their teamwork, spatial awareness, and tactical understanding of the game.
