Outdoor Learning

This term we have been learning about Meta – Skills and all the different ways that we learn. As we take part in more outdoor learning, we aim to match what we are doing to the meta-skills detailed in the poster below.

We have enjoyed Outdoor Learning with P1; we went for a walk around the local area and had a fantastic trip to the Sands of Sound beach. At the beach we worked together to build dams.

On each trip, we were learning the skills of focusing, collaboration, communication and critical thinking.

Pupil comments:

Focusing – We were determined to make a perfect dam and I even went in the water with my best shoes on.

Collaboration – We were working with P1s to build a dam. I liked going for a walk and being partnered with my sister.

Communication – We had to talk to each other to move the log into the stream. I enjoyed being with my cousin on the walk.

Critical thinking – We had to think about the amount of stuff like stones, seaweed and sand we should use for it to work.

We have realised that we use many of these skills in our day-to-day learning and we are becoming more aware of when we use these skills.

This term, in numeracy we have been learning more about money; how to count coin collections and how to calculate change. We enjoyed a super afternoon in the wildlife area when we used our money skills to ‘buy’ items from the ‘Sparks and Feather Nature Shop’ to make our own potions. Everyone really enjoyed our time outside.

Pupil comments:

I enjoyed getting all the resources to make £2 exactly.

Some of the class were shocked to see a chicken in the wildlife area!

We liked adding up to see if we got over £2 or under.

When we were making the potions it was messy with the mud.

I liked collecting the things from the price list.

The Vikings and Up-Helly-Aa

This term we have been learning all about The Vikings. The main questions that we focused on were:

Who were the Vikings and where did they come from?

How are our lives different from Viking life?

How are the Vikings remembered?

We worked together to make a map of the Viking Homelands and Viking Settlements. We have enjoyed researching Viking facts about long ships as well as what food and drink they had. We made shields, torches and helmets. We also learnt lots about what clothes they wore and enjoyed looking at the clothes that were worn by the Up-Helly- Aa Squads.

We made our own Viking Longships and think they look brilliant!

Pupil comments about project work:

I liked learning where the Vikings came from.

It was fun making the galley.

It was interesting learning what food they had that was different to us.

I enjoyed writing facts about Vikings.

It was interesting learning that the Vikings had different jobs.

It was fun learning what the Vikings ate.

We were very lucky to get to go on a trip to watch the Lerwick Up-Helly-Aa Jarl Squad march into the town on Up-Helly-Aa day.

It was great to get a close up look at the Up-Helly-Aa suits and weapons.

It was exciting to have visits from the Lerwick Up-Helly-Aa Jarl Squad, the Junior Squad, the Bressay Up-Helly-Aa Squad and the South Mainland Up-Helly-Aa Squad. It was interesting to look at all their different weapons and suits.

We ended our work on Vikings with our very own P3 Up-Helly-Aa, which everyone really enjoyed. The pupils worked well together to make suits, torches and a very impressive galley. They learnt songs and took part in a procession in the gym hall.

Chinese New Year

This week in music we have been learning about the importance of music during Chinese New Year. As part of our learning we watched a Musical Storyland episode called ‘The Great Race’ by BBC Teach, where members of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra play a range of instruments and tell the story.  We saw a new Chinese instrument called a guzheng which is played by plucking the strings.  You can see all the instruments in the picture below.

We also learned that this year is the year of the dragon and in the clip below, you can see us using scarves to move like the dragon dancers that perform at Chinese New Year celebrations.

UHA 2024

Tuesday 30th January 2024 was a special day at Sound Primary School as we were visited by both the Junior and Senior Jarl Squads of 2024.

The Junior Jarl Squad, led by Guizer Jarl Skeppare Nokkvesson (aka Oran McCulloch), were in fine voice during their time with us, supported by a group of young local musicians who did a brilliant job. ‘Yes Sir, I can Boogie’ was definitely a highlight! The clip below shows all the pupils from p1 to p7 joining in with the Up Helly Aa song.

The Senior Jarl Squad, led by Guizer Jarl King Harald Olafsson (aka Richard Moar) were also pretty spectacular both in sight and sound. A fantastic line up of local musicians provided the music for the Up Helly Aa song and also their squad song which made us all want to get up and dance! Here is a clip of all the pupils from p1 to p7 joining in with the Up Helly Aa song. The Jarl commented how loud and enthusiastic our singing was. High praise indeed from a ‘King’!

Art lesson

In Art P3 have been learning about creating emotion in their artwork.

They have done an amazing job of creating some angry looking vikings.

I just love all the expressions and details the pupils have added, well done!
