We look amazing in our lovely Christmas jumpers/dresses/tops.
Leadership Assembly
We had our leadership assembly today.
All classes had a different focus for the term. P3 were given Curriculum. We chose to share our learning about our Viking topic. Some people spoke at the assembly to tell the audience what we have covered. We all then sung ‘Loki the Joker’. Here is the link if anyone wants to hear it.
Loki the joker (song 1) – backing track | Primary Music – Viking Saga Songs
We had rehearsed another song, ‘Dragon Ships’ but the website wasn’t working so we didn’t get to sing it to the school but we will have another chance at the next assembly, if we can get the technology to work!
We enjoyed working with p3b to prepare for the assembly.
Meta-skills covered during this task included:
- Focusing
- Adapting
- Initiative
- Communicating
- Collaborating
- Leading
It was also really interesting to hear about the other classes and what they have been up to. Next term our leadership focus will be Wider Achievement (games club) and Community (JRSO).
Trip to the museum
We had the BEST morning at the museum! We got a tour around the museum to see how life was like before the Vikings and how it changed when the Vikings came to Shetland. We saw lots of artefacts in the exhibit and the lady told us lots about Viking life and what they did.
At the end of our tour we got a shout from Tony to tell us that there were orcas outside so we all ran out to see them. It was amazing! It was just a quick glance though as they were speeding through the harbour at a good pace. An unplanned bit of outdoor learning!
We went back inside to dry off and get snack. After snack, we got to see some Viking artefacts up close and hold them. Mari explained what they were for and we learned the difference between real artefacts and replica artefacts. We learned where they get the evidence from and how they find the Viking items. The axe was the favourite item to look at. It was heavy!
We got to make our names out of Viking Runes and designed Viking shields.
Mrs Anderson was so proud of us today, the pupils were really good at answering questions in the museum and the ladies that work there were very impressed at how knowledgeable the class were. Well done P3!
Meta-skills covered in our trip were:
- curiosity
- sense-making
- creativity
- critical thinking
- communicating
- focusing
Curriculum Information for parents/carers
Here is the information on what we will be covering this term.
Number Bonds to 10
We have been recapping our number bonds before we move on to trickier adding. Some pupils had forgotten or were a bit slow so we have been working on recalling the bonds quickly. These two games have been a huge hit in the class and have caused lots of excitement. Each pupil has been trying to improve their own score. The more we play it, the better we get.
Hit the Button – Quick fire maths practise for 6-11 year olds
Select Number bonds, make 10.
Number Bonds 20 | Math Playground
Select the target number as 10.
Rounding to the nearest 10
P3a are rounding masters now! I am so proud of all of them! We have been using number lines, playing connect 4 games, paired games, show me games with a partner and we have completed some worksheets too. The rocket rounding game is a favourite with all the class.
Click on the link below to have a go. Some pupils were even managing to do it without the number line.
Remember the thyme rule:
5-9 climb the vine
0-4 slide to the floor
Halloween
We enjoyed making cauldron pictures using paint bubbles. We painted some pumpkins then decorated it with pens. We played some halloween games in the afternoon including wrapping up mummies and the corner game.
Learning about dissolving
We had a fun science lesson last term where we experimented with different items to see if they would dissolve in water or not. The pupils loved this lesson and had a great time. We tried sugar, flour, coffee, rice, salt, sand, chalk and honey. Can you remember which ones dissolved and which ones didn’t? We had to figure out what to do with the things that wouldn’t dissolve. The class enjoyed going outside to empty out their cups or putting it in the bin. Items that dissolved were safe to put down the sink.
Meta-skills covered during this lesson include: focusing, initiative, communicating, collaborating, curiosity and critical thinking.
Exploring Ice
We did an experiment to see if ice (a pretend snowman) would melt quicker or slower if he had clothes on. Ask your children the answer! They were all surprised.
We have also been having fun with ice in the water tray and seeing what we can do to speed up the melting process. We also got the paints out and painted on the ice. Lots of fun!
Meta-skills covered are focusing, adapting, communicating, collaborating, curiosity, sense-making, creativity and critical thinking.
Kites, Wind Socks and Birds
We had the best time in the wind with our crafts we had made in art with Mrs Sinclair. There was lots of skirling and screeching.
Meta-skills covered are focusing, adapting, initiative, curiosity and creativity.
We also put a rain gauge out to measure how much rain fall there has been. But it keeps being blown over in the wind. We are going to use stones along the bottom to hopefully keep it in place.
Numeracy Week – Numbots
The class have been watching the Numbots series while we have been eating our snack this week. Here is the link incase anyone wants to watch one.
Numeracy Week – Place Value
We have been learning about place value this week.
Meta skills included in our numeracy lessons this week are focusing, initiative, communicating, collaborating, leading, sense-making and critical thinking.
Numeracy Week – Orienteering
The class loved during orienteering last term when we were doing our health week. Mrs Ritchie made up some more orienteering tasks for us to use based on numeracy. We did two today, one which included numbers and colours and one that used directions, colours and adding. The sun was shining and the class had a great time!
Meta skills included are focusing, initiative, communicating, collaborating, leading and critical thinking.
Numeracy Week – Art
We were inspired by Paul Klee to make some art using shapes. Our display is up in the canteen.
Meta skills included are creativity, curiosity, feeling, communicating and focusing.
Numeracy Week – Bingo
We LOVE playing bingo!
Meta Skills included – focusing, communicating and leading.

We are back from our holidays and have started p3a. We have been playing with lots of new toys. There are army soldiers in the middle wing and there is a space station. The favourite has been the phone and the computer to play pretend offices.
We have written about what we did in the summer holidays and Mrs Anderson has put them up on the wall.
Drawing has been fun.
We went to explore our p3 outdoor area and we have fun at the Adventure Playground.
Move up afternoon
We had a lovely afternoon visiting our new class.
Orienteering
We had a great time in the multi doing an orienteering task. We then had an explore in the wildlife area and there was a very friendly red admiral butterfly going from one set of rocks to another, it nearly landed on us a few times.
