Primary 1/2 has been very busy this term. We have been working hard on continuing to learn sounds in P1 and spelling patterns in P2. In maths we have all been working on addition and measuring which has been fun.
Christmas is fast approaching and we have all be working hard getting ready for the concert and making our Christmas crafts.
Primary 1/2 has been a busy place this week. Everyone has been learning about Guy Fawkes and how to stay safe on Bonfire Night. The children made fireworks pictures using junk to print and posters to show ways to keep ourselves and others safe.
Primary 2 are learning about Area in maths and have been busy using arbitrary units of measurement to find out the greatest and smallest area of shapes.
Primary 1 are continuing on their learning journey; using known sounds to read and write CVC words and learning numbers to 10.
The STEM Challenge in the bricks was to build a marble run and there was some very good results.
This week we have been using our outdoor space every day. We have been playing games on the tar, using our bodies to be fireworks and making the most of the crisp afternoons to enjoy the play equipment.
This helps to develop our muscles in our bodies which in turn, will help us have more control over smaller movement like writing and cutting
This week has been maths week in our school and there have been lots of maths and numeracy activities happening in P1/2.
On Wednesday morning, secondary 3 came into our class to show the children some activities they had produced to help develop early maths and numeracy during their maths lessons.
On Wednesday afternoon there was an open afternoon for parents to come and see the types of activities we use to help develop numeracy and maths. There was also a maths challenge to complete with various activities throughout the primary. Feedback on the day was positive and it was great to see so many visitors to our classroom all working together.
On Monday Primary 1-3 had an interhouse dodgeball competition. Everyone took part and had a fun filled morning! It was an overall draw with each house team winning 10 points. Well done everyone!
Today has been Fair Isle Friday in Whalsay School. Primary 1/2 have taken part in lots of fair isle inspired activities. We have been creating bunting, jumpers, patterns and Hama Bead designs.
Out topic on space is progressing well. The questions raised by the children in our floorbook are being worked on. This week we have been learning about the Solar System and stars. The children have been making constellations using chalk and glow in the dark stickers. It was really exciting to see their creations appear when we went into the dark cupboard!
The children have been really motivated by the Solar System and the orbits of the planets. Some of the children worked co-operatively to produce a giant solar system with others using their free play to produce pictures by themselves. They were able to show the sun as a star and the orbit of the planets. This was entirely child led and they were all so proud of their achievements. Well done everyone!
Children have been loving the experience of using playdough, paints and giant pieces of paper to practise making and writing the numbers we have been learning.
Today we have been working on 2D shape. The class have worked through play activities which have allowed them to investigate shapes and properties of shape. Primary 1 have been concentrating on naming shapes while Primary 2 are focussing on properties of shape; edges and corners.
