News!

On Wednesday, Primary 1 performed their Christmas Concert to parents and friends. The concert was postponed before Christmas due to sickness, but the children remembered their words and performed brilliantly!

This week we are continuing our learning on measurement. We were looking at measuring using sticks and the vocabulary; thick, thin, long and short.

The Snowman’s Coat

As part of their Winter topic, Primary 1 have been learning about the kinds of clothes we wear in Winter.

Today, they took part in an experiment called “The Snowman’s Coat”. This was a good opportunity for learning taking place, as most children believed the snowman wearing the coat would warm up and melt faster than the snowman with no coat. There was shock and disbelief when the groups could see that, in fact the coat kept the snowman colder for longer. We then related this to their coats keeping them warm as they were warm to begin with.

It was a fun afternoon and the snow outside made the activity all the more relevant and enjoyable!

Trapped in Ice!

As part of our topic on Winter, Primary 1 have been investigating ice. We talked about how water froze to make ice and how it could melt. There has been ice in the water tray and some of the children have helped to make ice in the class.

Today each group got an ice cube with a figure trapped inside. They had to come up with ideas to help them escape. We had various ideas including; cook it, smash it, play with it or run it under the warm tap.

Each group chose a different way and we timed how long it took to rescue the person. The warm tap was the fastest followed by smashing, cooking and playing with.

We went on to write about how the man might have been frozen to begin with. The children had some fantastic ideas from an ice breathing dragon to falling into the deep freeze!

Crafty Afternoon

We were really happy yesterday, when Primary 6/7 came to visit us and help us with some Christmas crafts. Primary 6/7 had planned and organised which activities to do with the younger pupils and supported them well to make 2 different items. Everyone had fun and Primary 1 enjoyed seeing the ‘big ones’ and making new friends.

P1 Enterprise Project

As part of our enterprise topic, Primary 1 have been busy creating a cookbook to sell on Thursday and Friday at the school concert.

Our cookbook is now ready and the children have had a splendid time over the past few weeks; gathering in recipes, trying them out and designing artwork for the cookbook. We are hoping to use any money raised to buy new resources for the Primary 1 classroom.

Dental Health & Healthy Snacks

Today we had a visit from the dental health team. They were showing the children how to brush their teeth properly and also the importance of making healthy choices and taking healthy snacks into school.

It was really interesting as there was a display of the sugar content in some of the most popular snacks and sweets. They were highlighting how important it is to look after our teeth as we need them to talk, eat and keep our smiles shiny!

BBC Children in Need

Primary 1 took part in the pyjama day fundraiser for BBC Children in Need.

We watched a “How to draw Pudsey” programme and listened carefully to instructions on how to colour in Pudsey’s head.

It was great fun coming to school in pyjamas, although some of them were worried they might need a peerie nap through the day!
