Curriculum Rationale (refreshed 2021)

Mid Yell Junior High School is an all-through school (3-16) serving the island of Yell. 

Our Nursery Departments’ catchment area is across the island of Yell and our Primary Department’s catchment area is central Yell.  We work closely with our Yell cluster primary schools – Burravoe Primary School in the South Yell and Cullivoe Primary School in the North.

Our Nursery & Primary Departments curriculum are designed principally in accordance with Curriculum for Excellence including working to develop our learners  four capacities:  successful learners, responsible citizens, confident individuals and effective contributors.

What make us unique?

  • We can take 2 year olds into our Nursery environment
  •  Start of every term we share Parent Information Sheets to support Parent Engagement
  • Our school librarian helps to develop literacy skills
  • We offer lunchtime and after school activities to our pupils during the year
  • We value outdoor learning and play experiences.
  • We supply wet weather clothing to all our pupils
  • We have a Confucius Classroom to deliver our L3 – Mandarin Chinese
  • We are lucky with our local environment and our a biodiverse school grounds including small forest type ecosystem, cycle paths, school garden, 2 polycrubs
  • We encourage all pupils to participate in Fit15 each day
  • P7 pupils buddy new P1 pupils throughout their first year in primary
  • We promote a Growth Mindset with a monthly focus
  • We embed a Nurturing ethos – understanding that ALL behaviour is communication
  • We have a House system allocating points for merits, competitions, Fit-15 laps
  • We have a part-time Youth Development Officer that works within our school
  • We have strong community links – leisure centre, Halls, Old Haa, Peerie Makkers, Cooke Aquaculture
