Our Secondary 1 and 2 pupils have timetabled 2 periods of Wider Achievement each week, for this term and next term we aim to have pupils working outside. At the beginning of this term, some pupils were working on their entries for the Yell Show, where pupils got a range of prizes at the Yell show at the weekend – well done to them for their Computer Art and all the other entries all our pupils had in, from pet dogs to knitting.

Other activities which have been happening this term are:- sanding and painting school benches; clearing out planters from around the school. What a great job the pupils have done today and each Wednesday building their skills and working around our school.

Our S1/2 Wider achievement Group 1 got the opportunity today to learn about Peat Restoration from the Shetland Amenity Trust Peatland ACTION project Officers Sue and Ash and Logan – Natural Heritage Officer.

We started by picking up Sphagnum Moss from next to the roadside and then we dropped the sphagnum moss in the sides of pools of water throughout the heathery hill nearby. We saw where dams had been constructed before to aid the moisture retention of the peat which had been left exposed.

Over the last few months there has been diggers converting the dried out peat hags into areas with less peat exposed. Therefore us being there to plant sphagnum moss so it can re-establish will improve the peat restoration process.

Ash, Sue and Logan spoke about the carbon emitted from exposed peat, the impact we can have on the planet and the demand for people to choose to work in the Peat Restoration industry which is still quite new for shetland (10 years). Group 1 will take part in dam building next week, with groups 2 and 3 getting the same opportunity later on this term.

On Wednesday 28 June 2023 our Duke of Edinburgh group set off on an adventure to Unst .  This practice expedition, supported by Mrs Tulloch and Mr Nicolson, was designed to build groups skills – map reading skills, walking and camping – so they are able to complete their expedition in the summer holidays.

Cooking breakfast at 5 am, looking a bit tired, but still having fun!

On Tuesday 27 June 2023 we held a sailing regatta.

Open Night 2023

Last night the school opened its doors to the community to showcase the work done by our pupils.

Lucky visitors were welcomed into the building with tunes played by Kaylan Brown and Peter Wood.

It was great to see so many members of the community wandering around the school – seeing classrooms, meeting teachers, viewing all the great work done by our pupils – from art, technical, science, French and much more.

A video capturing learning experiences during the year was shown.

On our trip to Glasgow, everyone had a brilliant time.  We joined with Baltasound pupils making new friends and memories.

We stayed at the Youth Hostel and we were are all happy with our rooms.  The activities were amazing – from the Wallace Monument, Science Centre, Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Crazy Golf, Gravity, Laser Quest, Go Ape, Foxlake Adventure Part, Ice Skating – to name a few.  Everyone enjoyed Go Ape because it the activities were up in trees because there are none big enough in Shetland,  it was different for everyone.

All the teachers that came with us joined in too.

It may not have been the nicest day of weather but didn’t stop the sailing!

Secondary 2-4 pupils again took to the water sailing around Mid Yell Voe.

A great improvement can be seen in all the pupils sailing skills – more control and direction!

Only two capsizes today!

We were delighted to welcome our new S1 class this week for their two transitions days. The new class got to experience a variety of subjects and met with their new teachers. There were lots of team building activities and we can already tell they are going to be a fantastic year group! There was even time to finish up with an ice lolly and game of rounders with our S4 class! Well done to all of them and we look forward to seeing them again in August!
