World Book Day 2026

On Thursday 5 March 2026 we had a great time celebrating World Book Day across the school. Pupils dressed up as their favourite book characters or came to school in pyjamas ready for a day of reading – the theme proposed by our S1 Library Literacy class.

During the day we had two “Drop Everything and Read” session where everyone in school stopped what they were doing to enjoy a book. Pupils also took part in a book cover quiz and visited our Reading Cafe, where primary and nursey pupils shared stories together. Parents were also welcome to join us.

In Art, secondary pupils have been creating book window displays and classes enjoyed a book walk around the school to see them.

Thank you to everyone who made the day so enjoyable!

Creative Arts Career Education

On Wednesday, 4 March 2026, Barum Smith from UHI Shetland visited our school to teach the S1/2 Wider Achievement class about Creative Arts careers and the process of making a movie.

There is a wide range of careers within the industry, including roles such as directors, camera operators, editors, scriptwriters, producers, sound engineers, front-of-house staff, marketing professionals and technical engineers.

As part of this learning, pupils took part in the filmmaking process themselves. They began by planning their ideas through storyboarding, which helped them organise the sequence of scenes and visualise how their story would unfold. They then moved on to filming, learning how to capture different shots and work together as a production team. Finally, they used editing to bring their footage together, adding structure and improving the overall flow of their film.

This experience helped pupils develop creativity, teamwork and communication skills, while also giving them insight into how creative projects develop from an initial idea to a finished production.

Bridge Building Competition 2026

Over thirty S2 pupils from around the isles took part in a Bridge Building Construction Competition at UHI Shetland on Wednesday

4 March 2026, including our team: Cassie, Filip, Kristoffer and Rachel. The competition is run by UHI Shetland, the Shetland Construction Training Group and CITB.

During the day, the teams had to work together to literally build a bridge out of wood, aiming to win one of three prizes: Overall Winner, Best Teamwork and Best-Looking Bridge.

Each team was tasked with building the most efficient bridge, with each piece of wood assigned a cost. The total cost was then calculated at the e

nd. Just like in real life, they had to consider their designs carefully and how their decisions would impact the overall cost. In reality, bridge-building projects can be extremely expensive.

Our team won the Best-Looking Bridge award and came 2nd place overall.  Well done them!

S4 Transition Trip 2026

On Tuesday 24 February 2026 our S4 pupils enjoyed a successful transition trip as they prepare to move to the Anderson High School later this year.

They attended the Local Opportunities Event where over 90 exhibitors – including local employers and universities – shared information about the wide range of pathways available in both Shetland and beyond.

Pupils then toured the AHS and took part in an overnight stay at the Halls of Residence, helping them build confidence and become familiar with their new surroundings.

A great experience to support a smooth and positive transition – well done S4!
