Christmas Shopping Night 2025

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our Christmas Shopping Night! It was a wonderful evening, celebrating the hard work of our pupils, who created a wide range of handmade gifts, and enjoying stalls from talented members of our local community.

Events like this help us to:

  • Raise important funds for school projects and activities – we couldn’t do it without your continued support and generosity.

  • Provide pupils with real-life enterprise experience, opportunities to work together as a community, and develop as responsible citizens.

Thank you to everyone for helping make the night such a great success!

S4 Mock Interviews Project

On Wednesday 19 November 2025, Adam from Sandisons visited our S4 Lifeskills class to share advice, hints, and tips on interview skills ahead of the DYW Mock Interview Project.

Last term, pupils refined their CVs and applied for a range of positions, including dental nurse, civil engineer, journalist, joiner, and farm worker.
This term, they took part in mock interviews with a variety of local employers to practise their interview skills and prepare for the world of work.

Thank you, Adam, for taking time out of your day to support and inspire our pupils! A big thank you as well to DYW and our local employers for giving up their time to interview pupils and provide valuable feedback.

Children in Need 2025

Our school had a lovely day supporting Children in Need. The day was organised by our S2 pupils who ran a coffee morning, pin the patch on Pudsey, colouring in activities and the crossbar challenge.
Pupils had the option to come to school in pyjamas and carry their things in “anything but a bag,” which made for an interesting walk along the corridor! Wheelie bins, creels, wheel barrows, drawer to name a few!
Thanks to the amazing support from our pupils, staff, and local community, we raised an incredible £826.71 for Children in Need.

Remembrance Day 2025

Remembrance Day 2025

Our S1 pupils have been busy creating a beautiful window display for Remembrance Day. Working in groups, each took on a different poppy colour to research and design a display for – learning about the meaning behind each poppy and what they represent.
Our S3 and S4 History classes have been using the Shetland Roll of Honour to research and commemorate soldiers from Yell who served in WW1. They have created a thoughtful display to honour their memory and sacrifices.

School Values – Learning

Learning is our third school value.  We are always learning – sometimes it’s easy, other times it may be hard.

At the heart of learning is using a growth mindset:

  • Stuck? Try another way.
  • Learning builds up over time, – you just have to start.
  • Resilience = never giving up.

Careers Week Event Nov 2025

DYW Shetland (Emma Spence) teamed up with Skills Development Scotland (Vaila Angus) for a Careers Event at Mid Yell Junior High School!

Pupils had the chance to explore lots of exciting career and their pathways, learn more about what DYW and SDS can support with, and take part hands-on activities to help them think about their future careers.

Well done to Bobby for winning the Careers Quiz!
A big thank you to Valia and Emma for organising this event – the pupils had a brilliant day!

The pupils took part in several different workshops from the Botanical Gardens, the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland and the UHI, exploring topics from plant growth and soil to marine life and local fishing.
Other workshops included hands-on activities in engineering, creating rockets, climate change and a portable planetarium. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day!
