RSPB Visit

We were lucky enough to have a visit from the RSPB in late February. Martha, our warden, came in to talk to us about the important of feeding the birds through the winter time.102_5751

We looked at a list of common Shetland birds and then played a game where we learned to gather food.
We had to dig and delve for the items.

Gathering

Next we discussed how we could help feed the birds through the winter time.

Martha showed us how to use orange skins, lard, oats and currants to make food that was full of energy for the birds. Each pupil made a bird feeder.

They looked like this. Mr Gill did not like the feel of the lard.

We put sticks through the orange skins so that the birds could land, perching as they fed.

We took them home for the birds to enjoy.

Website Live (almost)

Fetlar School It was 9:05am on a dull and wet morning when the new Fetlar Primary website tentatively went live on the web. At least we think its live on the web!! There will be problems with it but it seems to be working at the moment. Comments are currently closed on the website but we hope to get that fixed soon. The whole site is currently in test form and will launch officially on March 12th 2015.

The old website (which will continue in an archive form) will still be available.

Click here for all the News archive from October 2006 – February 2015.

Website Relaunch

Fetlar School

We hope that our new school website will be live by Thursday 19th February 2015. It will give us the chance to upload videos and offers lots more features than the old site. The old site will still remain accessible with its archive of events from October 2006 up to February 2015. At the moment the new site is still in ‘test’ form.

Rights Rap

The pupils have been following the Unicef Launchpad programme as part of our “Rights Respecting School’ lessons. We discovered a video that was about Children’s Rights made by Crosby High School and were inspired to make one of our own in under a week. We decided which 5 Rights we wanted to show, composed a backing track and recorded our voices. Ours looks more ‘home-made’ than the Crosby one but we like it.

WaterAid

WaterAid in Supportjpg

Our P6 and one of his friends from Unst cycled across Fetlar this weekend from the  “Welcome to Fetlar” sign at Hamars Ness to the viewpoint sign at the Banks of Funzie. It is a distance of 7.5 miles and they completed it in 2 hours exactly.

With sponsorship still to come in, it seems likely that they have raised over £250 pounds for the charity WaterAid. Well done boys; you really have taken the idea of people being empowered to help others to great lengths.

We’d also like to thank everyone who has sponsored the boys, donated to their cause and those people who came out to show their support!

Thank you.
