European Day of Languages 26th September 2018

We had such fun today at Fetlar from finding out what traditional foods French people eat.  What words are similar to our own.  Where France is. Who Henri Matisse was and what techniques he used in developing ‘The Snail’ (1953). Researching a children’s french news site and writing a multiple choice quiz about the facts (and opinions) the children found out today.  We also did some grammar work using the Duolingo website. Culminating in a Euro(franco)vision song contest starring ‘Les Petit Belles’, ‘Les Rogue Rappers’ and ‘Arcenciel’, with Les Petit Belles clear winners with their rendition of ‘Allouette’. Great fun was had by all.

World’s largest lesson 2018

Celebrating their commitment to sustainable development learning and their own rights the children of Fetlar made a poster showing their key Goal priorities.

Yesterday during the World’s Largest Lesson 2018 Fetlar Primary took part with 344,500 other pupils all around the world.  They celebrated the theme of this years campaign Take action by making a video and a poster explaining how the Global Goals for Sustainable Development affect the island of Fetlar.  They posted their work on the World’s Largest Lesson 2018 website https://worldslargestlesson.globalgoals.org/map/index.html

A letter from The House Of Commons

Today we got a letter from the house of commons from Alistair Carmichael.

He thanked us for getting in touch because we wanted he goverment to help refugee children to be reunited with their families. He’s going to write to the Home Secrtary Amber Rudd and when he gets a reply he will tell us.

We are looking forward to hearing from him and finding out what they will do to help.

Outright 2016

This term we have been working with Cullivoe Primary learning about the refugee crisis and how it impacts on childrens rights.

We have made a video for Amber Rudd, and have sent it to Tavish Scott and Alistair Carmichael, asking them to pass it on in Westminster and Hollyrood.

Cullivoe RRSA Outright Visit

As part of our work towards our level 2 RRSA award we have been working with Cullivoe Primary School. We went out to visit them and learn more about campaigning for childrens rights.

We worked in pairs to find out about different people who had moved or been refugees, like Mo Fara, Rita Orra and Albert Einstien.

As part of the Outright Campaign we will be writing to Amber Rudd, the Home Secratary, to ask for her support for refugee children in Europe and reunification for children and their families.

Vanuatu Fund Raising

Despite being busy with the solar eclipse, some of the pupils managed to make cakes for our Baking Sale at the shop.

We made chocolate crispies in school, in between eclipse viewings, but we also had pupils bring baking in from home and many donations of traybakes from the community. Nursery made delicious flapjacks.

We had a target of £33 so that we could donate to Unicef in order to supply 3 water purification kits to families in Vanuatu.

Thanks to everyone who came, and the kind permission of Fetlar General Merchants, we managed to raise £109 which means we can send 9 purification kits.

Well Done Everyone.

Vanuatu

sttuoc

We discussed the situation in Vanuatu caused by the cyclone at the weekend (13th-15th March) and decided that as a school, which believes in the rights of every child, we should do something about it. UNICEF said on their website that for £33 we could give 3 family sized water purification kits, so we decided to aim for that.

We are holding a cake bake this Friday (20th) at the shop, with all donations going to Unicef. Pupils, parents and friends of the school are making traybakes or fancies to sell. Nursery are also making cakes as well. We are not pricing items – just asking for a donation. We will be at the shop between 11 and Noon on Friday (or until we sell out).

Please support us.

Lotus Flowers

We are studying Buddhism. We have learned that Buddhists wish to attain a clear mind from from bad thoughts. We think that this actually means that the beliefs of Buddhism are really similar to the Rights in our Rights Respecting School work.

We have learned that the Buddha is not a God. He is a wise man who has gained enlightenment. We have also learned how good it is to have a pure heart.

We have learned about the importance of Lotus Flowers to Buddhists. These are flowers which show how hard life is as they grow from the bottom of a pool to the top. This is like the Buddhist belief in reincarnation until the believer attains Nirvana.

We were given the challenge to make our own Lotus flowers out of tissue paper to decorate our Buddhist shrine.
