Unexpected sites exhibition Mareel and Bressay lighthouse trip

On Tuesday 29th May 2018  Fetlar Primary School visited the Mareel to view their work in the Unexpected Sites exhibition.  The exhibition was part of a collaborative project to bring children to art and vice versa.  We made large maps and used our sketch books to create viewing frames and pictures from our environment.  Our pieces des resistance were the papier mache boulders which were based on the boulders slung over the wall at the big house in Houbie.  Everyone asked what the boulders are for since they look really old and its unusual to see them hung over the wall but they are weights to keep the ivy on the other side of the wall from falling down!

We met the children from Skeld Primary School there and then went on a bus to Bressay lighthouse with them to meet the resident artist Amanda Welch who lives in London but loves Shetland so much she keeps on visiting and drawing. She has drawn and made sculptures of the Shetland Islands.  One was made from dress material.

Aaron said the best thing he enjoyed was to see the rocks he had made at school with Amy. Darcy said the best thing she enjoyed was making new friends and going over to Bressay.

Planting Trees

We opened up a BIG box. Theres was lots of plants in it. We dug in the hole, then we found the stick, and put the stick in the hole. We put the tree in. We had plastic tubes, the rabbits can’t eat the trees then, they protect them.

Unexpected Sites

We are doing a project called Unexpected Sites with an artist called Amy Gear. Amy came to visit us on Monday to do some art with us. We had done a walk a while back and we had drawn pictures of what we saw. When Amy came we chose our favorite pictures and made them a lot bigger. I liked doing the smudging part. Doing the art was very fun here is a picture.   I did the one with the boy in a box.

Guizing!

On the 31st of October we went guizing! I was dressed as a wicked vampire. We went all over the island. People gave us lots of sweets and money. We started at Everland. When we finished singing the Halloween songs people gave us a donation to go towards the terrific fireworks on bonfire night. When it was pitch black outside everyone was so tired. My throat started hurting so I mimed the words for the Halloween songs.

Finally when we got to Stakkaflets, Mrs Hay, Aksel and Mrs Lewis had to go catch the ferry. When they left we started going to the houses in Stakkaflets. Then we all went home and I went STRAIGHT to bed! My favourite house we went to was Bea’s because she had stick on moustaches and lots of sweets. In the end we raised £77! Thank you everyone who gave us money and sweets!

Guzing

On the last day of October 2017 we went guizing and got lots of spine chilling sweets. We started off at Peter Coutts house then went to my Dads house. My dads house was petrifying and my faveurtie because when we walked in singing he put on a really ghastly mask and ran at us it was so terrifying!

Then we went to the other end of the island and worked our way to Stakkaflets. I went as The Poker, because I had a pokey stick and sometimes I would poke people. I would like to thank all the people who gave us sweets and money for fireworks. We raised £77.00 for the fireworks. It was exciting!

Neolithic Shetland

Chris is an archaeologist. He works for the Shetland Amenity Trust

He came to Fetlar and took us for a walk. We found a Burnt mound and explored a broch.

We went to visit Old Scatness. We had lunch in the round house. The carved stones were really interesting.

New Bikes!

Today we got new bikes and before I tell you what they were like we would like to thank FFF (Funds For Fetlar) for giving us the money so we could get these bikes. We got four bikes there was a taxi bike that has a driver seat and a back bit for another person to sit on, a balance bike that was red and if you get used to it it turns into a normal bike, there was a mini bike were the handles are above you and if there’s a straight line it can go fast but it has a back thing to stop you from falling off but it hurts and a thing that wasn’t even a bike, it was really flat and yu put your feet on the front of it and you move it with your hands. These bikes are really fun and there all different. Heres a picture…

New play equipment!

We got new play equipment! We got a climbing frame/slide and a nest swing. They are really fun! The slide is really fun, when we went on it, it went REALLY  fast so fast it made us fly for like 1 second. But we got a mat so then when we fly we fly on the mat!
