Fair Isle Primary School, Shetland

News from Britain's most geographically isolated school

About Us

Hello! Thank you so much for visiting our website and a very warm welcome from the UK’s most geographically remote primary school! We are a peerie (that’s Shetland dialect for small) non-denominational school situated in Fair Isle, Shetland.

We now have 5 wonderful children in our multi-composite primary class with 1 pre-school child in our nursery, who regularly works alongside the older children in lots of different ways. We are also part of a Shared Headship and are linked with Sandwick Junior High School on Mainland Shetland. Our children love nothing more than being outdoors, being involved at the heart of the community here, leading their learning and being curious about the beautiful environment they live in.

Fair Isle is Britain’s most remote-inhabited island. It is three miles long and one mile wide. There is approximately 26 miles of coastline if you walk every bay and headland. Fair Isle is situated almost halfway between mainland Shetland and the island of North Ronaldsay in Orkney; it is approximately 25 miles away from both. If you travel west from Fair Isle, the next land you would reach is Canada. Directly east is Norway. To discover more about the unique context of our island, please do watch this fabulous video produced by Promote Shetland, which does indeed feature the school.
