Rock Pooling to Begin Term 2!

It has already been a busy start to the new term (just how we like it here in Fair Isle Primary School). We are cracking on with some new learning and enjoying catching up with each other after the October holidays.

There has been some ferocious weather lately so it was good for the sun to finally shine, meaning we could have a fabulous morning rock pooling in partnership with Carla the Ranger from FIBO (Fair Isle Bird Observatory). We were, as ever, sharp-eyed when it came to spotting species and patient when peering under rocks and wading though pools. The waves were crashing so we kept ourselves safe (as we always do) and were closely watched by a curious seal as we ticked off the following finds: chitons, cushion and brittle stars, shore crabs, shrimps, anemones and even a mermaid’s purse (shark egg capsule).

A big thanks to Carla for delivering her ranger sessions this year. The Bird Observatory is closing for the season next week so we are looking forward to more citizen science and exploration in 2027.
