Transition Days

Transition 5 – Moving Up Day

It was so lovely to see al the children this morning. There were a mixture of emotions today, some excited, some shy and some a bit anxious. However,  they had a great morning and it was soon all smiles and lots of fun.

When they came to class they all listened so well to the very familiar story of Jack and the Beanstalk.

After the story the children went into 3 groups and had to move around the classroom to complete 3 different activities

  • Making magic beans- cutting skills and some fabulous sparkly paints to choose from.
  • Making a beanstalk – vocabulary, cutting skills to create spiral leaves and posing for a photograph climbing up the beanstalk.
  • Planting a Magic Bean in a pot to take home and look after,

I hope the Magic Beans grow. The children could tell me they need to water it and it needs lots of sun. Please let me know after the summer holidays if they have success growing it.

When the children begin primary 1 in August they will be able to spot the magic beans, beanstalk and some little people climbing up it!

It was great to see how well the children had listened to and followed instructions. Once they had finished all 3 little activities they went to explore and play freely in the classroom.

This was a great opportunity for me to get to know the children better and for them to become comfortable the classroom and shared area.

It was soon time for handwashing and lining up for lunch.

Fish and Chips was very popular today, followed by a cupcake or fruit. The children demonstrated lovely manners and again followed instructions for the lunchtime routines really well.

They all were really engaged, busy and happy. I can’t wait to see them again in August.

Transition 4 – meeting our buddies

This morning the children got to meet their buddies for next session. They all came together in the hall to meet up and they had little colour cards to find their buddy group.

Then we all went outside to do a scavenger hunt. The children soon warmed to their new buddy and were off!

They then had a little time to show each other their favourite thing to do at the play equipment.

Transition  3 – 1st June

The children all went for a little ride on the bus and when they arrived back at school I was waiting for them.

They all came through the playground and through the entrance which they will use when they begin Primary 1.

They were excited to see where they hang up their coats and bags, put their snacks and also where the toilets are.

They had a super time exploring the classroom and the shared area with their friends. This was such a great opportunity to have little chats with them all whilst they were playing.

The children gathered for a story before snacktime. It was one of my favourite funny books about a Penguin who says nothing! They all  listened so well and enjoyed it too.

I saw some really good handwashing, although some of them found it hard to reach the soap dispensers. I will need to get a couple of little steps before August – unless anyone has any spare ones we could borrow?

Snacktime was in class and we chatted about some of the healthy snacks and spoke about ‘happy teeth’ .

After snack the children went outside  for breaktime with the rest of the children in the school. They had a super time and it was lovely to see them mixing with the older children and seeing their brothers and sisters.

Transition 2 – 5th May

it was good to re-visit the pirate theme today with the children. They listened and joined in really well with the story. Practicing some counting, rhyme, word boundaries and syllables.

They loved meeting Poppy the Parrot and her funny ways. I am sure they will be seeing her again in Primary 1, along with her Cockatoo friend Patrice, who only speaks French!

Thy enjoyed the game using all the pirate related objects and were very patient and demonstrated good observation and listening skills.

Transition 1 – 28th April

It was lovely to meet all the children today and lovely to see some of the parents too. The children were really good at listening to instructions and were very engaged with the stories and ‘treasures’.

They were great at remembering the different parts of the story and helping me with ‘beats’ in the words and coming up with ideas.

Next session the children will be helping to finish the map and hearing more about Mrs Pirate’s adventures and who she met.

I hope they all enjoyed their visit to the library and are getting excited about coming into primary one.
