Today we started to get ready for Christmas and make a postbox for our Santie letters and cards.  The boys helped paint up the box ready and then when it was all dry we set up a letter writing station.   This was a great opportunity for the children to practice their mark making and letter formation.  It was lovely to see the children’s confidence in mark making increase with each letter they posted.

This afternoon we had lots of fun playing out in the rain.  After the heavy rain had stopped, we headed out to jump and run through the big puddles.  The children chose to fill up container and jugs with water and experiment with pouring and transferring.  Before long they discovered spinning made the water arch up through the air.  This was a lovely interaction where the children were exploring and experimenting with scientific thinking as they explored the movement in water.

Experimenting with sound!

The children continued their water play, this time their curiosity led them to explore the different sounds water makes when it hits different surfaces.  The children discoved that when they poured water from a height onto the upside down metal tubs it made a great big loud sound.

“It sounds like thunder”

“It sounds like a firework”

The children began to notice that each tube made a different sound depending on the size and shape.  Before long their curiosity expanded beyond water as they began exploring other loose parts and seeing what noises they made when they hit the tubs.

“Look I’m playing the drums”

It was great seeing the children exploring sound in such a fun and imaginative way.
