Welcome back! 8th January 2026

Welcome back to Nursery!  We hope you all had a lovely Christmas break.  It has been so great to have everyone back.

The past couple of days the children have been very excited to explore the snow and ice outdoors.  As soon as we went outside there was lots of searching for ice, hoping to find the biggest piece.   There was lots of wonderful descriptive language as the children talked about what they noticed.  “It’s freezing cold”,  “This one if heavy”, “look at this big one”,  “this one is all pointy”.   The children used great mathematical language as they compared size, weight and shape.

We introduced a small hammer so the children could safely investigate breaking the ice.   This sparked lots of interest and concentration as they cracked and smashed the ice and were proud to see the ice break up into smaller pieces.

There was lots of lovely imaginative play as some of the children made slushies using the snow and ice, while others lay back and created snow angles.  We also brought out paint so that the children could colour the snow in bright colours and add to their slushies.

Before we headed out to play, we had a think about what SIMOA might say to us to help us stay safe while playing outside in the snow and ice.  The children helped remind each other to walk carefully, be mindful of ice on the steps and not to run in case we slipped.
