Term 4 Week 1

Musical performances. Emma-Lee and Ava are taking part in the Young Fiddler competition this week. They practiced their pieces in front of the class and then with Eunice in the hall to our class and P1/2. We can’t wait to hear how they get on as I’m sure they’ll be amazing!

Visit from Billy and Susan. On Friday, Billy and Susan came in to speak to the school about their adventures with Molly the Otter (as seen on Disney). Thanks to Alina and Lewis for putting us in touch with them. I think it was very much enjoyed by the whole school.

Big Question. This week we have been learning about the different continents, seas and oceans in our world. The class worked in small groups to research different continents and oceans/seas and then create a ‘stall’ all about their elements. We then held a ‘tour of the world’ for P1/2 to come and learn about features of the world.

Term 3 Week 13

Science Skills Academy. On Tuesday we spent the day at the Science Skills workshop in Sandwick. The class were amazing and worked together on different activities and challenges all about energy. The also had an opportunity to use a kit to build different circuits. We even managed to have lunch outside as the weather was sunny and warm.

Rainbows. One of the challenges for ‘This or That’ this week has been rainbows which has seen some very creative results.

Easter story hunt. After learning about the story of Easter, the class went on a story hunt around the playground to find different parts of the story and then put them in order. They were off so quickly I could hardly get any photos but there was a lot of fun had by everyone.

Cactus Artwork. When Mrs. Johnson was covering the class a few weeks ago, she did some art work with the class. They used paint, pens, pencils. and oil pastels to create these amazing pictures. Well done P6/7!

Writing. For the last few weeks we have been working on note taking within our writing lessons. This week we used ‘ Tangled Worlds’ from the BBC Asia series, as our stimulus and the class did some artwork from their notes before making posters about the animals. Using Canva, they all picked an animal or a few animals, used their notes for information and created amazing posters. They considered themes, colours, fonts, pictures and more when making their posters and the results are amazing.

Volleyball

For the second half of the term, in PE, we have been doing volleyball.  We worked on ball tracking, movement, the 2 main volleyball shots, throwing and catching.  We played in a few different team games putting these skills into context and also played 2v2 games, using benches as our net.

Term 3 Week 12

Playpark Fun. We love getting outside for 31 for 31 and the class wanted to share some of the photos from this. The joy and laughter from everyone was so nice to hear.

Neurodiversity Assembly. On Tuesday, some members of the class worked alongside Mrs. Dade and some pupils from P4/5 to lead an assembly to celebrate neurodiversity week. They all did an amazing job, speaking clearly and confidently and sharing things about themselves linked to neurodiversities.  The girls even wrote a song all about our ‘Brains, brains, brains’ and how they are all different but that makes us who we are. Well done to all who were involved!

This term in Big Questions.  Our Big Question wall for the term is absolutely full! We’ve had such a busy term learning all about Human Body and food.

Purim. This week we have been learning all about the Jewish festival of Purim. We watched a short video about the story of Purim and learned about the different artefacts and celebrations connected with it too. The class then split into groups and created different things to show their learning. There was an amazing amount of creativity on show and the groups worked so well together. Well done P6/7!

Term 3 Week 11

CUHA. Here are some photos of the ‘Cunningsburgh Up Helly Aa’ that we celebrated last Friday afternoon.

Euroquiz. On Monday, some of the P6 pupils headed to Lerwick to take part in the Euroquiz. I was so incredibly proud of their positive attitudes towards the quiz and despite the nerves, they did super! Well done to them all for their hard work and dedication to learning in the run up to the quiz as well.

Table Tennis. Mrs. Smith was in for another table tennis session this week which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

Different diets. We have been exploring reasons as to why people have different diets and different world cuisines this week. In groups, we researched some different reasons including ethical, financial, religious, cultural and medical. Then in pairs, the class each looked at a different country and the foods / drink that would be eaten there.

Games Making

We spent 3 weeks in PE making up our own games.  The focus of the block was on how we worked with others.  We spoke about listening to everyone, giving everyone a chance to put in their ideas and accepting that your ideas are not always chosen by the group.  We also spoke about trying out the ideas and that they don’t always work first time, they may need tweaked a little or a lot before the group is happy.  The things we had to consider when creating a game were

  • how do you play the game
  • what are any rules and what happens if those rules are broken
  • how many people can play
  • what equipment do we need.

Term 3 Week 10

Scratch Coding. This week we have been working on our coding skills by using Scratch. For some pupils, this was a brand new thing and some already had experience in it. We worked on becoming familiar with the layout and controls within Scratch and the class all created amazing projects with moving parts, sounds, text and more.

Class visitors. On Wednesday afternoon, Stuart and Mr. Hayes came to visit the class from Sandwick Junior High School. We had a lot of fun matching faces, names and facts of the different staff members at the school and they spoke about worries and excitements linked to secondary school.

Big Question/Writing . For this week’s big question, we have been looking at the journey our food takes from where it is grown to our plates here in Shetland. The class worked in pairs to research different foods and then create a poster all about their food.  As our writing targets are linked to presentation and sentence length, the pairs had to really consider their layout, text, and images when creating their posters. They did so well that they have again managed to get into the 100 Club for writing. Well done P6/7!

SMUHA. On Friday morning, we were able to go out and watch the nursery procession and galley burning. We then welcomed the SMUHA Jarl Squad into school. It was a super morning and everyone enjoyed getting a close up look of the helmets, shields and more.  Three cheers for SMUHA!

Term 3 Week 9

Johnnie Notions Museum Visit. On Monday, we had a visit from the Shetland Museum to talk about Johnnie Notions and all he did to help tackle smallpox. Thanks to Mari for coming in to share with us.

It was lovely to see all the different ways that the class presented their home learning for this term. I was so busy watching them that I never took any photos. Well done P6/7!

Food hygiene. On Wednesday afternoon, Irene (Jack’s mum) came in to speak to us about food hygiene. We had lots of fun and there was a lot of debate about where we keep our eggs.

World Book Day. On Thursday, we celebrated World Book Day by taking part in a ‘Footy and Booky’ quiz which challenged the class to then create their own quiz. We had super fun doing this and the class came up with some super questions. We also had opportunities to read books we’d brought from home as well as enjoying the cosy area set up by Carrie-Ann.
