Term 1 Week 4

I’m Ava T and I’m writing the blog this week. I hope you enjoy it.

CASE Shetland visit.  On Tuesday, CASE Shetland came in to run a workshop all about engineers and what they do. We first spoke about different skills that engineers use like communication, creativity and problem solving.  Then we all took part in a bridge building competition using Knex as our building material. We had an hour and a half to design, test and adapt our designs. Then we tested the bridges to see how much they could hold. The winning  team was Rebekah, Isaac, Alagna and Ava G.  Everyone did well but that team scored the best ration of bridge weight to how much it could hold! We all really enjoyed it and could see lots of different skills that we were using throughout the challenge.

Writing. Our stimulus for writing is Crab Phare which is basically a giant crab who collects ships. People have written horror stories ( me ), making friends with it, and lots more awesome story adventures. We have also created fact files about crabs and worked in groups to create persuasive presentations about protecting our oceans.

Big Question. Our big question is all about engineering and how people used different engineering skills to build and defend castles. Using what we had learned about defending castles and engineering skills, Mrs. A challenged us to create our own trebuchets and catapults. There were lots of super designs created and we definitely had fun trying to fire “cannonballs” with our designs.
