  • STEM Visit

On Friday the 18th September, we had a visit from Eleanor Hutcheon from UHI Shetland. She came in to speak to us about air resistance and forces, which linked in perfectly to our topic this term – Science and Scientists.

Eleanor came with a challenge for the class, to build “land yachts” using a variety of materials.

Pupils were told to design a land yacht that when placed in front of a fan, would travel the furthest distance. This made them think about lots of different factors – weight, balance, air resistance, design, shape, friction and many more. There were lots of different and brilliant ideas!

All the land yachts travelled a considerable distance, most over 5 meters! We had two pairs – Emilia and Jamie, Orvin and Mikey – who’s yachts travelled 7.5 meters and came to a halt in exactly same place!

Well done to all the pupils for their amazing creations and a big thank you to Eleanor for the fun and educational session!

  • Throwback to Week 1

In Week 1 of this term, as part of our team building activities, I set the class a STEM challenge of building the tallest tower they could, out of dried spaghetti and marshmallows!

Everyone worked very hard and there were lots of really good ideas!

The winners of the challenge: Rhea, Astrid, Magnus and Nye with their marshmallow and spaghetti tower!
