Skipping

To finish the term in PE, we are Skipping.  We discussed the benefits, including stamina, rhythm, timing, coordination, perseverance and motivation.  We also highlighted that it was a cheap form of exercise that could be done in a small space anywhere in the world.

The effort in the gym has been amazing, with everyone showing a development in their ability.

Microbit Coding

In our laptop time today, we were learning how to code using different blocks of code to program microbits.  We explored various possibilities.  We made flashing hearts, coded our names and added music too.  Our learning will continue next week when we hope to code our microbits to be a pedometer and measure our heart rates too.

Buddying Time

We joined Miss Pottinger’s Primary 1 class yesterday for some buddying time.  We read books and drew pictures with them.  We’re looking forward to more buddying activities throughout the year!

Writing Project – Daily Write – 100% Club!

As part of our writing project this term, we are learning to include figurative language in our writing, including similes, metaphors and alliteration.   Last week, 100% of the class achieved their success criteria.  Primary 7A’s focus is ‘openers’ and that class also achieved 100% success.  So we joined them for a celebratory conga!

Shetland Youth Orchestra Performance

We were treated to a performance by the Shetland Youth Orchestra last week in the Sound Hall. The orchestra is made up of children from all over Shetland including both primary and secondary, and their musical talents are amazing!

We were introduced to all the different instrument families including brass, woodwind, strings and percussion. We listened to a mixture of music including classical, swing and even a theme tune or too. We particularly liked the Wallace and Grommit theme tune which they played as we were leaving the hall.

What a very enjoyable way to spend a Friday afternoon!

Rugby

P7 have been doing rugby in PE.  The pupils have been getting used to all the differences from the other games we have played.  This includes the shape of the ball, the type of pass, the direction of pass, the team formation, running with the ball, tackling and how to score.  By our last session the World Cup had started and it was great that so many had watched games and been able to see some of the concepts we’ve talked about in action.  It really helped them understand the game.

Royal Navy visit – STEM activities

The Royal Navy visited our class last week.  We participated in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) activities, including an engineering challenge to build structures as part of a team and we made our own rockets and launched them!

Painting with Nature – Exhibition at Mareel

Back in early 2023, we created our own designs on pieces of linen, using natural dyes.   These are now sewn together and are on exhibition at Mareel.  We walked there recently to see the exhibition.  We tasted nettle juice and enjoyed ice creams on the walk back, enjoying the sun!
