Energy

This term we have been continuing our exploration of energy and climate.  We made model water turbines which could generate electricity.  We also explored different materials for making floating water turbines.  It was quite tricky to get stability, we experimented with anchors and different shapes.  We then explored how energy can be stored by building our own batteries.

Literacy

Today we have been revising the subject and the object of a sentence and learning about active and passive sentences.  We went outdoors to write some active and passive sentences and to practise converting between.  We found lots of things to write about outside.

Light Sensors

During his class visit Elliot Tait explained the Albedo Effect to the class.  This is the ability of surfaces to reflect sunlight.  We found out that clean fresh snow reflects around 80-95% of the light that hits Earth.  This can make dark days feel a lot brighter when there is snow fall.  It also explains why our poles are so important in combatting climate change.

In class, we experimented with different light sensors coded into our microbits.  We learned how to use if/else statements and to code a display or alarm for a certain light level.  Some learners then moved on to a more advanced project, using radio signals to allow two microbits to communicate information.

As it snowed, we took our learning outdoors to test our light sensors in different conditions.  We certainly picked up high levels of light from the fresh snowfall.

Term 3 PE

We started the term focusing on fitness through Shetland Dance.  We discussed what components of fitness we needed in dance and were surprised that stamina and muscular endurance are both needed.  The dances we learnt were a Dashing White Sergeant, Orcadian Strip the Willow, a Gay Gordons, an Eva Three step and a Circassian circle.  The class particularly liked the Orcadian Strip the Willow.   In the Teacher led PE session the class have also done a Boston Two Step, St. Bernard’s Waltz and a Canadian Barn dance.

Our next block of work is Handball, which is a change to the term plan.  Handball was due in Term 4, but has been swapped with football so that we can hopefully get outside for the football block.

Solar Power

Today our class have been outside investigating the power of the Sun.  We connected solar panels to our multimeters to see if we could find the best location, on our school’s grounds, for solar panels.  We are learning how different types of renewable energy can be harnessed.

PRIMARY 7 HOP

We have been practising our Shetland dancing this term.  It has really paid off as we had an afternoon of live music from Leeshin At!  We had a fantastic hop celebration alongside P7 from Bells Brae.

UHA 2024

Tuesday 30th January 2024 was a special day at Sound Primary School as we were visited by both the Junior and Senior Jarl Squads of 2024.

The Junior Jarl Squad, led by Guizer Jarl Skeppare Nokkvesson (aka Oran McCulloch), were in fine voice during their time with us, supported by a group of young local musicians who did a brilliant job. ‘Yes Sir, I can Boogie’ was definitely a highlight! The clip below shows all the pupils from p1 to p7 joining in with the Up Helly Aa song.

The Senior Jarl Squad, led by Guizer Jarl King Harald Olafsson (aka Richard Moar) were also pretty spectacular both in sight and sound. A fantastic line up of local musicians provided the music for the Up Helly Aa song and also their squad song which made us all want to get up and dance! Here is a clip of all the pupils from p1 to p7 joining in with the Up Helly Aa song. The Jarl commented how loud and enthusiastic our singing was. High praise indeed from a ‘King’!

Visit from Carbon Officer

Today our class has a visit from Eliot Tait, Carbon Officer for Shetland Islands Council.  He explained climate change what climate change is and the processes, both natural and human, that contribute to climate change.  He made us think about carbon emissions and our own carbon footprints.  This is something we will definitely explore further in class.

Coding Up-Helly-Aa

Today our class were learning the difference between hardware and software.  We worked hard to make circuits using crocodile clips, led lights and our microbits.  We learned how to connect the wires together and added them to our Up-Helly-Aa pictures.  We learned a simple code for turning the lights on and then progressed to writing a code to flash the lights.  Some learners took it further and programmed in sound effects and music.  It was a very creative and fun afternoon.  There was excellent problem solving and collaboration on display.
