Ukulele Open Strings Jam

This term we have started of our learning journey in music by finding out about the history of the ukulele and how it compares and differs to other stringed instruments. We have learned how to hold the instrument in the best playing position, the string names and also different ways of playing the strings – plucking and strumming. We have learned about the musical staff and how to read music notation and in the video clip below, you can see us playing along with a piece called ‘Open String Jam’.

We have also been composing for ukulele and the photo below shows our class composition using music notation. Our next steps will be to learn to play our composition with an accompanying backing track. We will then be moving on to learn about improvising using the open strings and working on our finger positions to change the pitch of the note.

Art Lesson

In Art p7 have been learning about Andy Warhol and popular culture.

Having been inspired by his portraits, we drew a cartoon version of ourselves then transferred it on to a polystyrene block.

We had to cut up the block into 5 parts so we could print each bit a different colour.  Using the printing inks we printed each of the 5 pieces to create these colourful portraits.  Most of the class managed to to print 2, trying out different colour combinations.

Great work from p7 as this project was technical and quite tricky!

Hockey

P7 have been doing hockey in PE.  The activities have focused on how to use and turn the stick so that the ball only touches the flat side, ball control and sending and receiving the ball.  P7’s were able to transfer their knowledge from other games when playing in 3v3 matches.

Renewables and Hydrocarbons

We were lucky to participate in two workshops from UHI Shetland and Skills Development Scotland.  We focused on collaboration as we built model wind turbines from Lego Technic.  We also worked to create a device for cleaning up an oil spill in water.  We had to use lots of creativity and problem solving skills.

Handball

P7 have been doing handball in PE.  This is a new game to us, but we have used a lot of previous learnt skills and understandings to play in these games.  Some of the differences have been the size of the ball, using a one handed pass and the rule around movement and dribbling means the game is fast paced.

Technology – Wind Measure

We are getting quite confident at coding Microbits in class.  This week we took on a new challenge.  Our task was to build a working wind gauge and to code two Microbits that could communicate information via radio.  We discussed Metaskills at the start of the lesson and  continued to focus on collaboration.  We were working on listening to other peoples ideas and on being sensitive to their feelings.  It was very important that we measured accurately, which took a lot of collaboration.

We had to be really creative, especially when things didn’t always work out as we had first planned.  We had to design and build a structure that could measure tilt and find a way to securely and safely attach the Microbit to our structure.  Once the Microbit was in place we went outside to measure the strength of the wind.  The information was sent back to our second Microbit.  We got some good results!

Music Technology – Incredibox

We have been exploring different kinds of music technology recently and this week we have been using a piece of software called Incredibox. The online software enabled us to create our own music with a crew of beatboxers. We could choose from four different styles and had the chance to lay down, record and share our mixes.

We had criteria to follow when creating our mixes. Our compositions had to:

  • be at least 26 seconds long
  • have a loop change
  • showcase a muted/solo beatboxer

Here are links to some of our compositions:
