Thursday 7th November

Today at the beginning of school we had to come in with our P.E kit, a packed lunch and water bottle, as we were going to a mini-commonwealth games held in the Clickamin. When we got on to the bus, we went to Bixter then met up with Happyhansel. We went on a bigger bus to Lerwick then when we got to the Clickamin we went in, got changed into our P.E kits and went through to the hall, where we got told our teams. I was in team Shetland, with Loui-Bo. The other teams the rest of the class were in were: Scotland, Jersey and Canada. After we were all in our teams, we went to do our first sport.

My first sport was Athletics in the squash court, which was racing against each other, going off the reverse board, then going back. After that we went n some hurdles, and we had to jump over them sometimes twice in a race. Once we had finished Athletics, we went on to Bowls. Bowls is like bowling but you try to get near another small ball, not pins. The people taught us how to lay a mat, how to hold a ball correctly, and how to bowl. I took a few shots and it was funny as one of the women called me a “Natural” at it. I even heard her conversing with another women about it. After bowls, we had lunch, and me and Loui-Bo met up with the rest of Skeld. We were all talking about such nonsense that we barely got our lunches eaten before the 20 minutes of lunch was up.

Then we went on to try to find our next sport, hockey. Me a Loui-Bo got a bit lost but we eventually found the rest of Team Shetland. When we played hockey there were a few girls who showed us how to play, Once we had the hang of how to play, we did the number game, which was when they gave us a number, then called out any random number, if it was yours you had to run and try to get the hockey ball and get it in the others’ goal. After hockey there was Athletics again (a different place, though) with the longjump and some beanbag football game. In the longjump you had to run on to the springboard then jump off on to the mat, and in the beanbag football you had to throw beanbags at a football and try to hit it over the others’ line.

Once we had done all four of those sports, me and Loui-Bo went to try to meet up with the rest of Skeld, but we really didn’t know what we were doing. Once we had found them, we sat down while they announced the winners. The winners were Team Jamaica, which none of us were in, but a few of Happyhansel were in it. The prize was a water bottle. Everyone got a commonwealth wrist band and a sticker, and then we went back on the bus to school. It was a really fun day and I wish we could do it again.
