Higher Computing Science

Computing Science at Higher level has the same four topics as National 5, but goes into further detail:

  • Web Design and Development
  • Database Design and Development
  • Software Design and Development
  • Computer Systems

The course contains a substantial amount of coding, requiring pupils to pay attention to detail and develop their enjoy problem-solving skills. The languages learnt are:

  • HTML and CSS for Web Design and Development
  • SQL for Database Design and Development
  • Python3 for Software Design and Development

Towards the end of the course, pupils will complete an 8-hour assessment in class time. This will assess pupils practical skills on analysis, design, implementation and testing. This will make up about 30% of the final course grade. The remainder of the course is assessed in a final exam.

The SQA website (https://www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/56924.html) contains the Course Specification along with a Specimen Exam Paper and Sample Coursework task. Reading the exam paper and coursework task will allow pupils to better know if this is the course for them.
