We’ve made it to the end of the term! Here are some highlights from our week.
Nursery Day Out (Monday)
The bairns had lots of guesses for our day out destination – “I think we’re going on holiday.” “I have a mystery clue…” “Are we going to my granny’s?” “This is so exciting!” “My guess is Sumburgh Head or Michaelswood.”
The bus picked up from the door at nursery and we headed on our first adventure. We arrived alongside the Antarctic pelagic fishing boat in Lerwick Harbour. We climbed the gangway up to the boat. “This is like climbing up the Eiffel Tower!” We split into two groups from the galley. One group had snack and a colouring activity. The other group explored the boat. They headed to the control room which had lots of fancy equipment and buttons. The bairns took turns in the skipper’s chair. Then we moved downstairs to the cabins, with one of the bairns testing out the bed! Next, the bairns found out about what the crew wear – boots, oilskins, jackets, life vests, ear defenders, helmets and walkie-talkies. The engine room was next and it was loud and very hot. We finished up the tour with some time in the cinema and then found out about the strange pan in the kitchen. “Dir was da biggest fridge in da world and da biggest spinning pot but it doesna spill.”
Our next adventure brought us to Michaelswood. After our lunch in the polycrub, the bairns explored the forest and pointed out lots of dinosaurs on the way. “This is the best day ever!”
Party (Thursday)
We asked the bairns which games they would like at their party. They came up with lots of great ideas. We played pass the parcel, corners, musical islands, floor is lava, sleeping bunnies, musical statues and bug in a rug. The bairns chose the corners based on their trip – a fishing boat, a mackerel, a cat and a dinosaur. It was really tricky to guess who was the bug in the rug. “My favourite game was floor is lava.” “My favourite was all o dem.”
Picnic (Friday)
We were invited to attend a garden picnic in the playpark on Friday. We gathered on blankets and were treated to sausage rolls, pizza, chicken goujons, sausages and sandwiches. It was jelly and ice cream for pudding.
Play and Learning (Monday-Friday)
Here is a selection of our play and learning from the rest of the week. The bairns have incorporated fishing boats into their play, adding extra loose parts to represent what they saw on board the Antarctic. We had a visit from the Primary 6 & 7 bairns on Thursday. The nursery bairns showed them all their favourite things to do in the setting. To finish up the week we visited the sheltered housing residents with a summer card. The bairns used flower petals and small loose parts of create pictures for the front of the cards. We also played a game of “don’t get in the photo”. This made for some interesting photos!
We hope you have a wonderful summer break and look forward to seeing the returners from Wednesday 20 August. We can’t wait to hear all your news.
