National 4/5 Travel and Tourism

 The National 5 Skills for Work: Travel and Tourism Course is an introductory qualification in travel and tourism. It develops the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed for work in the travel and tourism industry (which will also transfer to many other careers too). 

 

AWARD RECEIVED
National 4 Travel and Tourism is an SVQF Level 4 course. 
National 5 Travel and Tourism is an SVQF Level 5 course.  

 

ENTRY LEVEL – What do I need to do it? 

  • You do not need to have done Social Subjects Electives to do National 4 or 5 Travel and Tourism.   
  • Anyone can choose National 4 or 5 Travel and Tourism at the end of S3 or beyond and most pupils will be able to do National 4 or 5.   
  • Your S3 teacher will tell you what your recommended level of study would be at the end of S3.   
  • The topics are the same for National 4 and 5, so everyone will do the same course and a decision about your final level will be made towards the end of the year. 

 

COURSE CONTENT – What will I learn?
There are four units (topics) for National 4 and 5:  

Unit 1: Employability
In this unit, you will develop skills to become effective job seekers and employees in the travel and tourism industry. You will learn the skills and qualities needed to be an effective employee and learn about different jobs that are available in the industry.  

Unit 2: Customer Service
In this unit, you will develop the skills and knowledge to enable you to meet the needs of customers.  You will learn to promote a range of products and/or services from the travel and tourism industry and apply this to customer issues. 

Unit 3: Scotland
In this unit, you will develop your knowledge of travel and tourism in Scotland and the skills required to meet the needs of customers.  You will learn about different tourism locations, current travel trends and carry out an investigation of travel and tourism in Scotland to meet customers’ holiday needs.   

Unit 4: UK and Worldwide
In this unit, you will develop your knowledge of travel and tourism in the UK and elsewhere in the world and the skills required to meet the needs of customers.  You will learn about different tourism locations, current travel trends and carry out an investigation of travel and tourism in Scotland to meet customers’ holiday needs.   

 

TEACHING METHODS – What will I do? 
In the Social Subjects department we use a variety of teaching methods. You will be working as an individual much of the time, but often, also, in pairs, groups or as a whole class.  You will look at pictures, maps, graphs and photographs, watch short clips and have lots of discussion to help aid understanding.   You will be given opportunities to create presentations and posters, to use ICT and take part in research and investigations.  You will, of course, be doing some reading and writing, but your teachers will aim to make your learning as active and fun as possible.  There are lots of opportunities to apply your learning to real-life-style scenarios too. 

 

ASSESSMENT 

  National 4  National 5 
 

Unit Assessments 

 

You will have to pass an assessment for each of the four units.  This assessment could be anything from a poster, to a talk to a test.  This will be marked by your teacher. 

 

Exam 

 

There is no end of course exam for National 4 Travel and Tourism 

If you pass all four unit assessments, you will be awarded a National 4. 

 

There is no end of course exam for National 5 Travel and Tourism 

If you pass all four unit assessments, you will be awarded a National 5. 

 

PROGRESSION IN THE SENIOR PHASE
A National 4 pass could lead to National 5 in S5.
A National 5 pass could lead to Higher in another subject in S5.
