Stick insects

Weโ€™ve had a fun few days in P1b.

We have new class pets – six stick insects! We had great fun trying to spot them. We have spoken about how we look after them. They need food and water and a clean tank. On Thursday we did black pen pictures and did a brilliant job writing a few sentences about them.

Weโ€™re continuing to look at worms. Last week we went on another worm hunt. We poured water on the ground and quietly waited for the worms to poke their heads up! This week we were learning about worms working had in our compost bin. We spoke about what foods we can put in our compost bin and then had a look and a smell!

In numeracy we have now moved onto numbers to 20. We are great at counting forwards and backwards and looking at numbers before, after and in between.

Our highlights this week have been:

  • Looking in the compost bin
  • Playtime – inside and outside
  • When we were drawing the stick insects
  • Doing the dot to dot
  • PE – we are doing athletics

Worm Friday in P1a

On Friday we spent the day learning ย about worms. We began by making up questions about the things we wanted to learn eg What do they eat? What dangers do they face? Why are they so important in the garden? How do they help with composting? We shared some fact sheets together and a book called Yucky Worms by Vivian French. Outside we went on a worm hunt, looking for places where worms might be. After our worm hunt we examined worms using our magnifying glasses, looking closely at the different parts of their bodies.

Mouse ๐Ÿ House ๐Ÿ

Last week we were learning the ou sound as in sound, out and cloud. We shared the story of Mouse House by John Burningham and an ORT story about Floppy called Ouch! We talked about rhyming ou words, we drew, painted and made mice and houses. We used our work to help us write a description of ย  a mouse house!

The er sound as in tiger ๐Ÿ…

Primary 1 are continuing to learn about double sounds.

This week we were focusing on er. To help us remember our new sound we shared the story of the Tiger Who Came to Tea. We looked for er words in the story, drew and made our own tigers and used our sound knowledge to help us write about a tiger.

Planting Potatoes ๐Ÿฅ”

Before the holidays we had to chit our seed potatoes by placing them on the warm window sill.

This week we placed our chitted potatoes into grow bags and covered them with a layer of compost.

We collected the worm โ€œteaโ€ from the bottom of the wormery and used it to water the potatoes.

Problem Solving

Every week we spend time working together to solve different problems. We have to make sure that everyone in the group gets to have a turn. We have to listen to each and share the resources.
In this problem we had to listen to each other describe a picture of a clown and see if it matched a picture on our board.

We had to order a set of flowers in this problem.
