Caterpillar Newsflash!

What is this caterpillar doing?!

Is he practicing headstands? Doing yoga? Has he slipped and is desperately trying to climb back up?!

His body is making a ‘J’ shape and he is very still. Can you see the strands of silk attached to him? What is he making?

Looks like some of his friends are crawling up onto the lid to join him…whatever can they be up to?

Do you know why the caterpillars are hanging upside down?

Tell us your ideas by replying to this post!

Splendid Spiders!

Yesterday we made these brilliant spiders with Mrs. Glass. Today they looking very comfortable in their very own web! Some people chose to add palps (used for touching, tasting and feeling) or fangs (for paralysing prey!). Did you know, it only takes a spider about three hours to make a web? Could you build a trap to catch your dinner in three hours?!

Guess What’s Next!

Mrs. Ward gave us clues to next week’s minibeast that we are studying in class! Here they are:

  • It lives on the ground.
  • It eats other minibeasts.
  • It is in a nursery rhyme that you know.
  • It is in the minibeast category called ‘arachnids’.

What do you think it is?

Cool Caterpillars!

Alec says- ‘Can you see the difference?’

Hamish- ‘Measure the caterpillars!’

Blaise- ‘Try and crack the case! How did the caterpillars get bigger?!’

Look at how our caterpillars have changed!

Beth McN says ‘They have doubled in size in just two nights!’

Mrs. Anderson wonders how big they will be when we come back on Monday!

Slug and Snail Watch!

Yesterday we went on a minibeast hunt- we were looking for slugs and snails! We had to think about where we might find these minibeasts- light and dry places or dark and damp? Where do you think snails and slugs like to live?

We carefully examined the slugs and snails and then put them back in their own habitats where they belong!

Caterpillars Day One

We are very excited- we have 5 caterpillars in our class to look after! How will they grow and change? Check our blog every few days- we will update you on how they are doing!

Can you see the black bits? They are bits of exoskeleton that the caterpillars shed as they grow. Do you see the webbing? It protects the caterpillars from things that want to eat them! The brown balls are caterpillar poo!
