Analysis

This is examining multiple pieces of information in detail to explain and interpret what learning has occurred and how to move forward.

At Early Level:

  • Practitioners continually reflect and analyse information from observations, tracking documents, learning journeys, etc., identifying the next steps in learning, which inform future experiences and changes to the environment, resources, and provision.
  • Practitioners should moderate judgements and processes to ensure consistency, validity, and robustness.
  • Practitioners continually reflect and analyse their practice to provide the best possible outcomes for children.

“What does the child’s actions emotions and words tell you about their development and learning?”

(Realising the Ambition, Education Scotland, 2020, p. 48)

As highlighted in Scottish Borders Council’s Learning Teaching and Assessment Framework, analysis is:

  • “To identify next steps in learning
  • Moderation processes ensure judgements are robust and equitable
  • To improve teaching practice”  (p. 13).
