What Do Pupils Learn and Develop in PE?

Throughout your child’s PE journey at Sacred Heart Primary School, they will learn and develop a wide range of skills and attributes.  Pupils are also Holistically assessed in these areas frequently through teacher judgement and self-evaluation over the 7 years at Sacred Heart Primary. These are broken into 4 different areas:

Pupils will develop the above skills and attributes through a variety of contexts, revisiting these contexts frequently throughout their time at Sacred Heart Primary, this giving them the chance to deepen their knowledge and improve themselves in every area.

What Activities Do Pupils Experience in PE?

The following 6 contexts are traditional for our PE programme at Sacred Heart Primary:

NET & WALL GAMES – Players/teams score points by hitting an object into an area of the court in such a way that the opposing player/team cannot hit it back within the allowed amount of bounces.

TARGET GAMES – Players score points when they successfully throw or strike an object closer to a target than their opponents were able to.

STRIKING GAMES – Striking/Fielding Games are activities in which players score points by striking an object and running to designated playing areas or prevent opponents from scoring by retrieving the object and returning it to stop the play.

INVASION GAMES – Invasion games aim is to attack an opponent’s territory and score a goal or point.

Teacher Training – Learning Through Games

Our pupils have been at the forefront of a National Physical Education project with Scottish Association of PE (SATPE). Our pupils were filmed demonstrating and taking part in a variety of Physical Education activities. This resource has been developed by Chris Crookston, Cameron Stewart and IRIS Ayr to support teachers across Scotland in their delivery of Physical Education. We are very proud of this excellent resource. Please see the link below to a variety of games:
