This term, Primary 1 have been learning all about how to look after themselves and others. We’ve been talking about kindness, friendship and sharing, linking closely with our story The Rainbow Fish. The children have been practising how to take turns, use kind words and work together during play and learning time.
We’ve also explored ways to keep our bodies and minds healthy, including eating well, staying active and getting enough rest. Through circle time and class discussions, the children have been learning to recognise different feelings and talk about what helps them feel happy, calm and safe.
Phonics
Primary 1 have made a fantastic start to their phonics learning this term! The children have been learning to hear, say, read and write a range of letter sounds. So far, we have focused on identifying initial sounds in words and blending sounds together to read simple CVC (consonant–vowel–consonant) words like cat, dog and sun.
We’ve also been practising letter formation and using our sounds to build short words in our writing. The class have enjoyed lots of fun, hands-on activities, songs and games to help them remember each sound.
Talk for Writing
This term, Primary 1 have been exploring the story The Rainbow Fish as part of our Talk for Writing lessons. The children have loved getting to know the story through actions, story maps and lots of retelling. They can now confidently sequence the main events and talk about the important message of kindness and sharing.
We have worked together to innovate the story by changing some of the characters and settings, using our imaginations to create new versions of The Rainbow Fish! The class have also been developing their descriptive language to talk about how the Rainbow Fish looks and feels.
It’s been wonderful to see how engaged the children are with storytelling – they’ve become fantastic little storytellers!
White Rose Maths
Primary 1 have been busy developing their early math skills this term! We’ve been learning all about numbers to 5 – recognising, counting, ordering and writing them with confidence. The children have also explored 2D shapes, including circles, squares, triangles and rectangles, through sorting, building and creative activities.
We’ve had lots of fun investigating weight and length, using words like heavier, lighter, longer and shorter as we compare different objects. More recently, we’ve been learning about day and night, thinking about what we do at different times and how we can spot the changes in our world.
R.E
In R.E. this term, Primary 1 have been learning about belonging, caring and kindness. We’ve been talking about the people who are special to us, how we show love and care at home and in school, and how we can help others.
The children have listened to and discussed simple Bible stories, such as The Creation Story and The Good Samaritan, thinking about what these stories teach us about looking after our world and being kind to everyone.
We’ve enjoyed using art, drama and discussion to reflect on our learning and celebrate the ways we can all make our classroom and community caring, welcoming places.
