Learning Through Play

At Fisherton Primary, we believe that play is powerful learning. Through play, our children explore ideas, solve problems, develop confidence, and build relationships. Our play pedagogy values curiosity, creativity and collaboration.
In our classroom play is thoughtfully planned and supported by staff who observe, question, and extend children’s thinking. Whether they are building, imagining, investigating, or creating, our pupils are developing essential Meta Skills for life and learning.
“Play is the work of the child.” – Maria Montessori
“Play is essential to development because it contributes to the cognitive, physical, social and emotional wellbeing of children.” – Kenneth R. Ginsburg

Big Class P4 – P7

Welcome to The Big Class

We are a multi-composite class of P4, P5, P6 and P7 learners. We have 14 enthusiastic pupils this year. Our class is full of curiosity, creativity and kindness. We love to learn together, challenge ourselves, and celebrate each other’s successes.

Our teacher is Mrs Hannan.

Our P.E. days are Tuesday and Thursday.

Our Learning

In The Big Class, we Lead Our Learning — our voices, ideas and interests are valued and help shape what we do. We take ownership of our progress and reflect regularly on our achievements.

📖Literacy

This year, we are embarking on our South Ayrshire Reads journey, which helps us be confident, motivated readers and writers.

We have four phonics sessions each week, exploring new phonemes and graphemes. Phonics is woven throughout our everyday learning across the curriculum.

Our whole-class novel approach encourages deep understanding, critical thinking, and rich discussion. We explore language, character, theme and structure, and pupils read aloud independently or in small groups with an adult each week. Reading for enjoyment is promoted within the class and pupils can see what children’s novel their teacher is reading in our class library.

Our Class Library

Our writing is interdisciplinary, linking to other areas of learning such as social studies and science. Pupils engage in a weekly immersive writing experience, as well as regular opportunities for writing across the curriculum.

Maths

In maths, we take a thinking classroom approach that encourages curiosity, collaboration and critical thinking. We focus on understanding, reasoning and problem-solving — not just getting the right answer.

Our maths learning cycle includes:

  • A non-curricular thinking task to spark curiosity and reasoning skills.
  • A discursive task where pupils explain and debate their mathematical thinking.
  • An investigation that encourages inquiry and creativity.
  • Deliberate practice, consolidating key concepts and fluency.
  • Reflection, where we review what we’ve learned and identify next steps.

We use a concrete–pictorial–abstract (CPA) approach, ensuring pupils develop a deep and flexible understanding of mathematical ideas.

Our Values

We live by our school values every day — being Safe, Kind, Helpful, Responsible, Respectful and Tenacious.

Through our “Anchor Your Actions” Class Bucks system, we recognise positive behaviour, teamwork and effort. Together, we build a classroom community where everyone feels supported and proud to be part of The Big Class!
