Broad General Education: Music

Our BGE Music curriculum is varied and diverse, giving pupils the opportunity to learn music in a number of different contexts.

Throughout S1 and S2, pupils can expect to develop their instrument skills through performing on the different classroom instruments, including: tuned percussion, keyboard, guitar, ukulele, bass guitar and drum kit. Pupils develop their instrument skills by performing pieces of music they know, recognise and engage with in small groups or as a class. In S3, pupils continue to improve their performing skills by focusing on two chosen instruments and performing as soloists.

In BGE, pupils develop their listening skills by working through music theory and other units. Pupils can expect to explore projects based on ‘Instruments of the Orchestra’, ‘World Music’, ‘Scottish Music’, ‘Popular Music’ and ‘Musical Eras’. These projects provide opportunities to develop knowledge and understanding of a wide range of musical concepts.

Pupils engage with composition skills by creating pieces of music individually, in a group and as a class throughout the BGE.

Pupils will also experience a number of Music Technology projects, using computers, microphones and other equipment to create, manipulate and edit songs, soundtracks and videos.

At the end of S3, two pathways are open to pupils. Pupils can choose National 5 Music, continuing to develop their performing, composition and listening skills. Alternately, pupils can choose National 5 Music Technology, allowing them to continue to develop their skills in recording, audio engineering and listening. Pupils may opt to choose both subjects for S4.

What Pupils Say:

I love playing all the different instruments in Music, you get to try out loads of them!

Music Technology is my favourite, it is cool using computers to create your own music.

The best part about Music in S3 is getting to focus on two instruments that you choose.
