RSPB

The Children in the 3-5 room took part in the RSPB birdwatch. We learned about how the birds survive when it gets icy and the ground is covered in snow. We learned about how important it is to feed the birds in winter. We asked the children some question on what do birds usually eat?
Freya ” Worms from the ground”
Grayson “Berries”
Joy ” seeds”
The children then made bird feeders using seeds, nuts and fats, they hung them on the bird station along with some water. The children then became “ornithologist” and sat at the window using the binoculars and ipads ready to record what birds visited. We used a bird chart to count, and name the birds we saw. We saw Robins, Seagulls and Blackbirds.

Eco Report

Appreciation of our local environment
Fantastic adventures last week with the explorers started off with the children appreciating the wonder of nature as they showed empathy when they found a bumble bee and it’s looked poorly lying on the path so we gave it some juice for energy ,we read stories to learn why bumble bees are important “we need bees to make honey for the breakfast “”they look for the middle bit of a daisy flower they take it to make honey “We left fruit in a tree and a cave for the forest animals to eat we could see the teeth and paw marks they left ”that’s a squirrels teeth “ “the foxes “a bird “” ababy kangaroo “
We discovered no water in the burn “the sun dried it up “ “The birds drank it all “ no splashing for us though we challenged ourselves to balance along a fallen branch which was in the burn .
We made wishes as we blew the dandelions .
Ooh a visit from st David’s school children we showed them how to get in and out the hammock safely .
Using wool we made necklaces by threading through holes in the leaves 🍃
Creating dens ,flags ,a house for Cheeky Marvin to live in 🐒and squirrel adventure park!🐿
not forgetting making s’mores over the campfire 🔥😋
Team up to Clean up
Well done to all the children involved in the big clean up! A very enthusiastic effort from all involved!
Lovely to see the park and forest litter free!
Well done everyone 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
 Bug Hotel        Feb 2022
Children in 3-5 room had great fun making a Bug Hotel. They worked together piling logs, twigs, moss, leaves and bark to make a cosy shelter for the many bugs they hope will visit.
They were learning about biodiversity, about the natural environment. We discussed what minibeasts we might see using the hotel, what they eat and what need to survive.
We learned that some bugs like dark, damp conditions under logs and some like to live in leaf piles.
Joy ‘I’m making a wee room for them all’
Rocco ‘I think spiders will come’
Frankie ‘spiders and worms’
William’ ladybirds and worms’
Hopefully, armed with our magnifying glasses and clipboards to record what we see, we will welcome a range of woodlouse, centipedes, spiders, beetles, slugs, snails and bumble bees.

Litter: the children have been involved in a number of litter picks in the nursery grounds. They also took part a Renfrewshire Council initiative “Spotless September” and litter picked in Shanks Park and outside the nursery grounds.

Biodiversity: Children have been making bird feeders and feed the birds regularly. The Forest Kindergarten visits are enabling the children to explore and learn about nature in the outdoors.

Waste management: Children are learning about the importance of recycling and made a video asking for any used unwanted spectacles, batteries, mobile phones and stamps. Thank you for your donations already received we have also been recycling paper, plastic bottles and yoghurt pots in nursery.

We are planning on making a bug hotel to explore bio-diversity and how the eco system works. If you can help, items we require are: small sticks, small logs, pine cones, bark, moss, dry leaves, small terracotta pots.
