Literacy and Languages

Our children are encouraged to listen and concentrate, to take part in talking activities with confidence, to respect others and to express themselves through many different writing activities. ‘Big Talk’ in the nursery/P1 and ‘Big Writing’ in the rest of the school are used to promote and enhance high quality writing throughout the school.

We encourage good handwriting and accurate spelling through daily practise.

We try to make sure that all children can read competently. We encourage them to enjoy this activity and appreciate books. We use lots of different levels of books to develop reading comprehension but our main language/reading schemes are Storyworlds, Oxford Reading Tree and Tree Tops. Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar are used in the Early Stages. Literacy World is used to develop language work in the upper primary classes. Reading from the child’s reading book is not necessarily taught every day but reading activities are used to develop the child’s reading vocabulary and confidence.

MLPS (Modern Languages in Primary School)                                      Pupils from Primary 4 to Primary 7 are taught German by trained teachers within the school.
