As part of our outdoor learning, we used what were possibly the last two nice days of Autumn last year to create a playground compass (see below). We used string, poles and measuring tapes to find north (thanks to the sun at midday GMT always casting a shadow exactly north) and we measured (by guess, checking and improving) to establish North, South, East and West – the directions on the ground are all true (i.e. correct)! All in the Langcraigs colours too – well done P5! All classes can now use this compass to help with studying position and movement, angles and degrees in mathematics! We may well have to ‘top-up’ the paint this session to keep it nice and bright.
